Have you tried the cleaning function? It is usually accessed via the Canon software that you would have loaded when you first installed it on your computer.

If you don't use the printer regularly the ink can dry up block the
'very' small inkjet nozzles. Occasionally people have problems when
using generic non-genuine ink cartridges, but I have much experince
with re-filling Canon ink cartridges and they are much more user
friendly then the durabrite ink cartridges used in Epson printers.
