For the most part fax machines don't have 8 or 9 ring pick-up for answer machine feature. the calls tend to drop off or the fax will pick up if not carefully programmed. sharing a fax, phone and answering is the trickiest feature to program

Given that the last question I responded to for you related to a Fax JX200 - and this to a JX500 - I am not certain which model you are actually asking about. The information that follows relates to the JX500. Further, if you need information in this regard on the prior post in order to feel that the previous response was a FixYa level response, please let me know. I responded based on the information you provided...
Based on the fact that you are getting a constant 5-ring situation, it appears that the machine is in TAM (tel-ans mach) mode. The purpose of 5 falls into remote recovery of messages - toll saver results in the phone answering after 2 rings if there are messages to retrieve, and 5 if there are not. This is done to prevent long-distance charges if there are no messages.
Two ways to accomplish an 8-9 ring objective. (1) Place the machine in manual mode, which means answering every call and sending faxes to the machine. Additionally, a "fail-safe" on this mode is that it will switch to TAM/automatically answer (if there is a recorded greeting message) after 15 rings - below. (2) The incoming ring - ring count - can be set (under Fax/Tel Auto) to ring 10 to 60 seconds before the fax picks up. (3) Alternatively, the Incoming Ring ring count can be set to have the fax ring 2 to 30 times, depending on the country specific parameters.
Re TAM: When the fax is set to <MANUAL MODE> and <MAN/AUTO SWITCH> has been set to <OFF>, TAM MODE will be activated if the fax rings 15 times and the call is not answered (only when an outgoing message has been recorded). When the call is disconnected, the fax returns to <MANUAL MODE>.
