Possible to print only black when colour cartridges are empty?

My printer refuses to print in black without having all 3 colour cartridges full. I rarely print in colour so I would expect to change the black cartridge more often. Does this mean that the printer isn't set up to print in black even though the black cartridge is completely fine to run? Is there any way I can get around the problem and program the printer to print in black using only the black cartridge?

I have a full cartridge of blue magenta and black, my yellow is gone. I needed to print an important documant yesterday and couldn't because my yellow is empty. On my last printer which was a lexmark, if one of my color cartridges were empty, it wouldn't allow me to print in color but I could still print in black. I guess this is how they make their money.

I have a epson cx5000. Black is 3/4 FULL and color is out. I only want to print in black & white but it is forcing me to buy more color. I will never buy or recommend anything epson forever. I don't even care if they fix this issue in the future.

This printer does not let you print if even one of the cartidges is out of ink. I suggest you replace them and then in the printer properties change your settings to the way you want color to be spent.

I have a brother fax machine model 2480c, just want to know for the ink catridge, do i need full ink in the entire 4 catridge in order for the printer to work OR i can just have say the black colour...

1) The Brother printer is structured in such a way that it will stop all the printing operations if any one of the ink cartridges are empty.

2) If the printer continues printing inspite of having anyone empty cartridge then the cleaning cycles would suck air from the empty cartridge.

3) This would damage the print head.
However, the black and white print mode can operate exceptionally well when the cartridges are empty.

Want to print only in black

search through your manual for grayscale options... this is usually code word for black and white...

Why do color cartridges have to be full to use the black only?

In order to prevent the "colour" cartridges from drying out,
the printer will often mix in a bit of "colour" when you ask to print with the "black" cartridge.

So, they are *NOT* "drying-up" -- they are being used.

Epson Stylus Photo PX800FW doesn't print text

printer working ok-did 50 colour photos ,6x4 when i made a mistake and pushed the print button when there was still about 1 inch of the previous photo still being printed. This print emerged with overprint of about 1".Thereafter the printer has refused to operate properly the next print being heavily discoloured. It then told me to replace the light magenta cartridge-this I did and the discolouration changed hew.It then told me to change the magenta and light cyan carts.-I did and discolouration changed again. It then told me to change the yellow and cyan=siscolouration now bright
red over coloured. I then successfully printed a letter in B&W proving that the black cartridge was still working. However as soon as I tried again to print a coloured photo it now tells me that the machine does not recognise the black cartridge and orders me to change it and until I do refuses to take any instructions telling me to install the black cartridge cprrectly. The black cartridge installed isout half full and has successfully printed copies and photos.I have carried out the suggested remedies by the machine and none were effectuve. How do it the infernal machine working again???

Colour Ink Jet Cartridges emptying during a black ink print run

Hi,
If you go to your printer properties, there should be a setting whereby you have to select the option to "PRINT USING BLACK CARTRIDGE ONLY". Make sure this option is selected, otherwise your printer will use ALL colors even if you only print black.
Let me know if you need any further assistance.
Best wishes,

I have a X3350 Lexmark printer. I do not require color printing at any time. How can I print black only using one black cartridge only. The color cartridge is never used.

let the colour cartridge be inside the printer.if its empty then also black will print.but its necessay that the colour cartridge should be in the printer as without the colour cartridsge in the printer the circuit does not gets completed.but the cartridge should be inside the printer if its empty no problem you can just print in black it will print.

Printer not printing

Unfortunately, like most multi cartridge ink jet printers when one ink is empty the printer will cease printing regardless of whether you just want to print in black and white and you have plenty of black ink left. I have heard of people tricking the printer into believing the cartridge is full by placing coloured tape etc in front of the ink sensing device but I am not sure how the Brother senses the ink levels as i have some aftermarket ink cartridges for mine which seem to be completely non-opaque (unlike the originals). The need to have colour cartridges in even if you only ever print with black ink is good news for Brother as the MFC-210c uses a large amount of ink during it's routine cleaning cycles (that you cant stop) and will empty all 3 cartridges in under 6 months without ever printer a single drop of colour ink. Sorry about all the bad news, at least your not alone......
