Epson Stylus Photo R1800 InkJet Printer Questions & Answers
Photoshop and the R1800
I had the same problem and read everything I could find about it. Finally after tinkering around, I discovered that printing everything using "Photo Enhance" setting produced the best pictures. Also, I use a calibrated monitor and print through Photoshop Elements 5. Lots of Luck! Cyndy
How to remove print head of epson stylus photo r1800

Had the same problem - but the print head is actually easy to remove.
1) Remove ink cartridges
2) Remove 3 Phillips head screws at the bottom of the cartridge housing. (looking down from the printer front - top left, bottom left, top right).
3) There are 2 small plastic tabs on a plastic bracket that secure the flex cable on the right hand side of the cartridge housing. Gently release the tabs with a small flat head screw driver.
4) Lift the print head straight up (don't pull on the flex).
There may be a release for the flex to separate from the print head. But I did not see one. Instead I poured 1/4" of Windex in the bottom of a small plastic container and soaked my print head for about 15 minutes (occasionally agitating).
Then put back in reverse order - be sure to seat the flex in the guide (top-back-right) of the cartridge housing before screwing down. Then run a cleaning or two to flush the cleaning fluid out of the print head. (I have a waste ink tank installed so I am not worried about dumping excessive ink into the waste sponges).
The differences was remarkable - though there was still slight banding - maybe should have soaked longer (1 hr perhaps?) - I may repeat if it remains an issue.
Additionally there were large solid deposits on the left side of the print head which were responsible for scraping heavier weight photo paper. These dissolved in the Windex too.
Paper doesn't always feed, and when it does, the paper rolls through without printing
Get a Q-Tip and alcohol. Wet Q-tip with alcohol. Stand in front of the printer and look down where the paper feeds through. On the righthand side you will see a big roller that pulls the paper through and a little one right up under that. Clean both of them with the alcohol and Q-tip. Press the paper feed button and as it trys to act like it is feeding the paper, clean the roller with the Q-tip. Do this until the paper feeds through correctly.
How do I run cleaning option -- won't print
Select something to print. Then go to FILE - PRINT and when the dialogue box appears, click to right of named printer on PROPERTIES. Then when that dialogue box appears, click on the MAINTENANCE tab and you can then click on Head Cleaning. Just make sure there is at least one sheet of A4 office-type paper in the printer, as when the clean has finished, you need to click on Nozzle Check. The printout will show if the nozzles are now working. Never do more than a couple of such cleans and always follow with the Nozzle Check printout - you can turn the paper round to use a fresh part - it only uses a small part of the paper each time.
