Epson rx580 printer

New printer, new ink cartridges. Although I have carefully installed the cartridges 3 or 4 times, I keep getting the message. "Cannot recognize ink cartridges"?

I read your reply and said to myself I already did that, but I went back and checked again. I had already reinstalled the software. When I went to reinstall the cartridges, I noticed a little blue on another cartridge. I took a qtip and cleaned the electrical pads on each cartridge and on the printer. I replaced the light cyan one. When I hit OK to charge the cartridges, the printer went through a completly different charge sequence which worked. My guess is that the light cyan cartridge was bad. Thank you for your comment. The bottom line is, if it can't read the cartridge, it can't move on to anything esle, like printing. Thanks again.

I have replaced all of the ink cartridges twice & cleaned the cartridege and connectors with a qtip & reinstalled the program now what?

  • Astrobot Nov 29, 2007

I tried to use a "compatible" set of ink cartirdges for the Epson RX580, and the printer says "Cannot recognize ink cartridges". I bought a second set from another vendor; same thing.

It says online that Epson RX580's bought after a certain date won't recognize any cartidges except Epson's own ink cartirdges. If this is true, I'll be spending $62 or more each time to replace the whole set!

This is discouraging, and I never would have bought Epson had I known that.

    Have you heard of this?

I have been using the same print cartridges that cam with the box for a couple months. Suddenly, there was a message that the printer cannot recognize the ink cartridges. I turned it off, and turned it back on, and it still said it. I took them out, and snappeed them all back in securely, nothing. I don't really know what to do next.

All of a sudden this is happening to me too. Sounds like a consistant problem with these machines. Nice Job Epson!

  • Anonymous Jan 01, 2008

I have the same problem. I just set up my Epson rx610 and its telling me it can't recoginise the ink cartridges, yet I am using the ones that came in the box!

  • misterjad Jan 06, 2008

same problem with the included ink cartridges of the rx585 ..... sigh

  • Anonymous Jan 07, 2008

I had the same problem in August when I bought the machine. They sent me new ink cartridges, which worked. In November when I needed to change the ink cartridges, I had the same problem. "can not recognize ink cartridges". I called them again. They didn't offer any advice, but they shipped me a new unit, with directions on sending the other back. It worked fine for a month and a half. Now that I am replacing the ink, I have got the message again on the new one that Epson sent replace the other one. I'm glad I decided to look this up on the Internet because I figured if it had happened to me on two different units then it must be a common problem. I'm going to wipe the electrical contacts with a qtip. Hope it works. This is a great big pain.

    same problem here!

I called tech support... They say

    1. take out the cartidges and replace.

    2. pull the power cord and wait 5 seconds

    3. if this doesnt work, buy a new printer from our "loyalty" websit

I asked him, "So I can go to the loyalty website and buy a new printer that will break in one year,"

    "Yes," he answered

I asked him if i could get my money back on the 100 dollar cartidges, he said no.

    I hung up

I've had the same ink problem, which seems to come and go. Although this printer is selected as my default, every morning when I turn my computer on, and try to print, Have to delete the job, go to preferences, go to printers, reload the drivers, then print again. Then it works all day, but the first time I turn the computer off, I start all over????

  • drandy Apr 24, 2008

fckin rx580 whenever the light cyan runs low. the printer fails to recognize any new ink cartidge. amy solution... maybe a master reset button sequence... damm i should have bought hp!

  • blmbob May 15, 2008

Instead of saying one or two cartridges needed replacing, it said replace all cartridges. thought that very odd, but replaced them all with brand new Epson brand cartridges - $90 worth and then I get "can't recognize ink cartridges" error. I tried shutting off, unplugging, verifying they were "snapped in", verified the yellow tape was removed and cleaned contacts - both on the printer and new cartridges, but no go.

i have full cartridges that i can't use because the printer says either replace in cartridge or can't recognize ink cartridges

  • greeenbr Jul 18, 2008

My printer is saying I have to change the colour cartridges. I only use the grayscale when printing. I always print in black and white and my ink should not be running out. If the coloured ink is out... which it should not be!!!! why wont it let me print in black and white. I took each cartridge  out and put them back in and unplugged it. It still says replace ink 5 colour ink cartridges and not the black and I only want to use the black. Help!

  • sthielman1 Aug 03, 2008

I had the message "Cannot recognize ink cartridges" and replaced them all with high capacity epson cartidges, and still have the same issue. Spent $100 on ink and can't use them. Will try cleaning with qtips.

WTF? What a waste of $

  • sdwyer0428 Dec 10, 2008

I have the same problem. But when i insert one cartridge in, close it up, and hit ok, it goes thru the cycle, and recognizes the one cartridge, and not the others, i continued to add one more cartridge at a time, each time the printer recognized the cartridges and only told me the ones i haven't loaded yet. When i have one left, i put the last one in, hit the ok, and then all of a sudden the printer didn't recognize any of them again. I tried it again for a different color on the last cartridge, and same thing, didn't recognize all of them. Tech help is garbage also, routed me to the philipines and they have no clue how to fix anything. Please help, the printer is just over a year old, so warranty is up!

  • ataro Dec 20, 2008

My RX 580 says it cannot recognize ink cartridges. Called Epson and they said I could send it in for a repair.

  • nicholas1987 Mar 24, 2009

do not buy an Rx series printer they are a waste of money the ink runs really quickly. this all in one is a money pit. i have this problem where it cannot recognize ink cartridges. if i leave one out it will recognize that there is one missing and when i put it back in it says all the cartridges cannot recognize. i just got off the phone with there tech team they dont know anything about the printer its a waste of time and let me add this printer is maybe 7months old and they dont have any info about the printer. i will never buy anything off this company again. buy an HP you will not regret it believe me i have a small business and i go throw printers like water and i buy the warrenty that saves me from buying another printer but if you want headaches buy an epson..

  • Anonymous Apr 16, 2009

I have the same problem with the epson cx8400 -- & had an experience almost identical to the one aspecht described on 3.10.2008. My questions is this: why hasn't epson been forced to issue a recall?

  • art_tech_uk Apr 22, 2009

Epson are just a greedy company that don't like ppl to buy ink from anyone else and is the reason i believe they put that **** chip on just to make it hard for any cartridges to work other than epson origanals and the fact that ppl are also getting problems even when using origanals just shows how hard epson are trying to stop us using 3rd party cartradges. Ive had it with epson and because of there greed ill be getting a HP as my next printer.

  • Anonymous May 20, 2009

Same problem here. Brand new cartridges, printer in less than a year old, and it "cannot recognize ink cartridges." Nothing precipitated it, either... it was working fine, then ran out of light magenta ink, and at some point before I could replace it the control panel lit up with the error message. From what I'm reading here nobody, least of all Epson, is going to be able to help. I've had great luck with higher end Epson printers, but maybe this consumer-grade garbage, like most consumer-level garbage, is to be avoided. You get what you pay for... I spent a little disposable income and got a little disposable printer.

I just started calling Epson's customer service line every time. They always offered to FEDEX new ink. I got tired of waiting for it to come and began returning bad cartridges to office depot where I had bought it and found out that they will take it back if it doesn't work. Now I've decided that some (a lot) of Epson's ink cartridges for the RX580 are bad and that I just have to keep trying until I get ink cartridges that work. I had tried the qtip cleaning, checking the ink/sensor connection, and making sure I had them snapped in tight. I've finally figured out it IS the ink. BTW, I always use the ink Epson reccomends, so it is definately that many of their cartridges are faulty. It's a pain to have to return them but as long as I can return and replace them and eventually have a machine that will print when I need it to, I can live with that.

As long as I can return the ink that doesn't work to office depot than I'm somewhat satisfied. about 1 in 10 cartridges doesn't work for me sometimes and I just return it. Epson returned my ink and sent me another printer at the beginning of the problem, before I realized it was faulty ink . I woul dlike to buy and HP also.

finally got mine to work maybe after a hundred (seriously) take in and take out of the same cartridge. The black would not recognize and I keep taking it in and out and then I remembered a trick I would use on other devices. I got a q tip and drenched it in alcohol, I used perfume because I was out of the stuff. Then I keep rubbing the metal part of the cartridge. I found that the more I rubbed it I found the q tip become yellow. My guess that since the yellow cartridge is next to the black, the color kinda got on the black metal part. I keep rubbing till the q tip became clean, waited until it dried, and then made a little prayer, then it worked!!!!!
Thank God because I was about to give up. I have a rx595 and I am using cartridges that are generic and the kind you can fill yourself. I would never pay the epson price on the ink, way too much.

I have had the same problem for a while now also. Just purchased all new cartridges, thinking it was them but same issue. When it comes up, and complains about a specific color, I just remove all cartridges and push them back in. It seems that the cartridges identified by the printer aren't always the cause.

Very annoying.

I threw the 580 away after over a year of being annoyed. I actually gave it to my ex-wife, who says it works perfectly?

Posted on Sep 23, 2008

Hey All,

Got a solution of sorts,

It works with an Espon RX-585 (UK model).

When an ink cartridge goes empty, replace all the original cartridges that came with the printer.

Then, remove one original and replace it with the compatible (knock off), Press the OK buttons and let the printer check it. Do this for all the cartridges, one at a time.

I know it is time consuming, but for me at least, it worked.

Hope it helps. Happy printing!

Thanks for everyones help, it appears I am not alone. I have never completely solved this error message problem, but I get get better and better at work arounds, and other tricks. This printer is not my most expensive piece of hardware, but I will never forgive epson for its performance. and Apple who recomended it. Henners

I bought the RX-580 because I knew I could buy a continuous ink system for it, which I did. I have NEVER bought another set of Epson ink cartridges for it. Found the printer on sale for $99 and paid about $80 for the ink system. I've used it for close to 3 years and only refilled the ink reservoirs once. I too had the "Cannot recognize ink cartridges" problem, but I just kept re-inserting them and it finally worked okay. (Probably bad electrical contacts to those chips that others described above.) Brad K.

My current problem is that some nozzles remain clogged even after many cleanings. I've been trying to get hem cleared but have not been successful so far.

I posted this problem originally. After repeatedly getting this message,"can't recognize", I bought knock off catridges, and they have worked fine ever since, but....since I've used the knock off ones the printer won't work when I turn it on in the morning. I have to delete the first print job, go to preferences, printers, reload the rx580 drivers, and print again. After this it works perfectly all day, but I have to follow the same proceedure every morning. If I use the Epson cartridges I don't have to do all this reloading, but it works for a while then says, "can't recognize"??????

I'm currently running the knock off epson ink in the RX580 and just needed to replace the black. This time all I could find was the real Epson cartridges so I swapped it out with the knock off and got the "Cannot recognize ink cartridges". After fooling with it for a minute, making sure the contact was good, seated properly, etc... I popped all the cartridges out and put them back in and bingo, ink cartridges charging. For what it's worth; that is what fixed it for me, good luck!

Cut off the printer. open the access door under the scanner bed. ( the same door used to access the ink.) cut the printer on. when the ink tray moves all the way to the far left. use something like a rolled up magazine to obstruct its return to the right side. after you do that, the tray should move freely. (you should be able to reposition it where ever you like.) put the tray where you can access the ink. open the ink tray and remove all of the ink close the ink bed and turn on the printer. it will tell you to install the ink. (you may have to replace some if not all of the ink.) i'd like to end this little problem solver by saying F*@k you Epson. (p.s. dont bother calling the technical center if you own a mac. They discontinued servicing us.)

Double check to see if the cartridges that came with your machine are really the correct ones. And if they are then make sure they are snapped in securely as they must make a solid contact to read the cartidges. Also make sure the drivers and software are properly installed onto your computer. Also make sure that the tape that is usually on the cartridges to protect them in handling and shipping are removed before installation.

How do I remove the black ink cartridge to put in a new one?

1 Remove and Install Cartridges Be sure you have your replacement cartridges handy before you begin. You must install new cartridges immediately after removing the old ones. Caution:
Do not open ink cartridge packages until you are ready to install the ink. Cartridges are vacuum packed to maintain reliability. 1. Turn on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series. If a cartridge is low or expended, you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen. If a cartridge is expended, you must replace it to be able to print. If a cartridge is low, you can continue printing until the cartridge needs replacement. If you're replacing a cartridge before you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen, press Setup, select Maintenance, and press OK. Then select Change Ink Cartridge and press OK. 2. Open the scanner. 3. Open the cartridge cover. 4. Squeeze the tab on the cartridge and lift the cartridge straight up to remove it. Dispose of it carefully. Do not take the used cartridge apart or try to refill it. Warning:
If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water. Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children. 5. Before opening the new cartridge package, shake it four or five times. (Do not shake a cartridge after opening the package; ink may leak.) 6. Remove the cartridge from the package, but be careful not to touch the green chip on the cartridge. 7. Remove the yellow tape from the bottom of the cartridge. Caution:
Do not remove any other labels or seals, or ink will leak. 8. Insert the new cartridge into the holder and push it down until it clicks into place. 9. Once you replace all the necessary cartridges, close the cartridge cover and push it down until it clicks into place. 10. Close the scanner. 11. Press OK to begin charging the ink. This takes about 2 minutes. When you see a completion message on the LCD display screen, ink charging is finished. Caution:
Never turn off the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series while ink is charging or you'll waste ink.
If you see an ink replacement message on the LCD display screen, press OK and press down all the cartridges securely.

Replaced all ink cartridges after low ink warning. Since then I get an error message, "ink cartridges cannot be recognized" ok proceed produces an information message to replace ink cartridges. On it goes...

First, are you absolutely sure you have the correct cartridges? Next, have you tried replacing the old cartridges that were originally there, or were they completely empty? Next thought is that your print heads might be dried up. Sometimes regular users can fix this with alcohol wipes depending on your specific model.
