There are two common causes for this phenomenon.
The first, and most common is a defective tonercartrige and the second is a defective fuser.

I'd suggest replacing the toner catrige.

When printing on my oki c5100 text or image - it prints fine but with a smudge/ghost of the image or text also on the paper. I know I need to order new toner - could this be why?

Open you printer and pull out the fuser assembly and look if the upper roller is fine because if it`s damaged it could lead to the double image.

The printer is transferring ink from the top left of the paper all the way down in line with the rollers. It looks like a smudge but you can see the print. I have cleaned it, but still has the problem. Any...

Image problems on laser printers are almost always caused by the toner cartridge or the fuser. If you have already tried a new toner cartridge and that has not fixed the problem you need a new fuser. A fuser that is going bad will cause lines, smudges and ghost images. You can buy it alone or as part of the maintenance kit. www.printerworks.com is a good place for HP parts. Search by model number to see what you need.

Smudges and 'ghost image" down the page from true image, little used printer, not even a whole cartridge used

Laser Printers that printouts can be smudged usually means the Transfuser (the part that settles the toner onto paper) is not fully functioning or damaged. Simply replace it and it should be back to normal. However, these Transfusers are quite expensive. So you may be better off to get a quote for a new one if out of warranty.

Print smudges and ghosts down the page

Usually ghosting is caused by the fusing unit, which usually means that it needs replaced to be honest. You could try getting into the fuser and giving the rollers a wipe, they may have dry toner on them which could also cause the fault. but i'd say the fuser could need changed!!!
Hope that helps  (",)

Canon D760

You have one off possibly 2 problems.

1. The toner cartridge is defective. Try another and see if the problem goes away.

2. The fuser roller is defective. It has a teflon coating and after a while it either gets encrusted with toner and transfers ghost images or the image doesn't fuse properly.

I would try the first alternative. Let me know if it works for you.

Colour printing gives ghost image

Are you using genuine Brother color cartridges? If you are, then try different paper (20 pound laser printer paper or plain paper copier paper rather than inkjet paper,) Also, do not use recycled paper. If that does not work, you may need a new imaging (OPC belt) unit, or a new fuser assembly. Check your owners manual about when to replace the imaging unit or fuser. It is usually after 60, 000 prints have been run.
