My best guess without knowing more is that your printer has both a color print cartridge and a black ink print cartirdge. Replace the black ink cartridge and you should be fine. You might also find that replacing the entire printer is less expensive....All the best!

I have a pinnacle Pro 901. How do I print in black & white only?

Hello, try this: Start Menu, > Printers and Faxes> then right-click on your printer. Move the pointer down to 'Printing Preferences' and click the 'Advanced' tab. There you will (should!) see 'print in greyscale' . Select this then click 'Apply' then 'OK' at the bottom of the page.

Installed a new HP black ink cartridge; the officejet 8500 pro will not print any black print. The color ink works okay.

First print a self test page on the printer and check if you have black print on it or not.

To do that Go to your printer :-

Press Setup button -->Go to print report-->hit ok--> use arrow keys and choose the self test page.--> hit ok.

If you have the self test page fine then try to make a black copy from the printer.

Put a black font printout on the scanner glass facing downwards. Press copy black

Check if you have the black ink working.

If yess then there is some thing on the system you are doing wrong. May be the printer properties needs to be set or some settings needs to be checked.

If no then try to clean he ink cartridge and try to align the cartridge on the printer.

To align Do this

Press setup-->use arror keys to navigate to tools -->and choose the option align cartridge or align printer.

If you do not find the option in the tools option try looking for it in the print report...

On the computer Go to printer under control panel and right click on the printer and go to print prefernces --> go to the TAB called colors and under color options -->choose print in greyscale--> and under that choose the Black only option. --> hit apply and then hit ok.

Now try printing..!

Let me know if any of these steps works....

I have it set to print in black only but it uses up the color ink anyway. What gives?

Hi,
On the printer driver, (after click "print" and the menu for selecting the printer appears and you can select the number of copies etc...go to"properties") . Here go to the "Color" tab.. if you truly only want to use black ink, then select "Print in greyscale" and select "Black only". After that just Click "OK" at the bottom and "Ok" to print your job in truly just black ink. :)
Cheers, Ed

Black won't print

I have this same model printer and had this same problem. I solved it by running the cleaning cycle repeatedly (30 times or more). It nealy drained the black cartridge, but they're cheap compared to a new printer ($100 for the mfc240c that replaced it). Press the ink button to the left of the display. Select "test print" and "print quality from the menus, then hit print. After printing, the display will ask if quality is ok. Press 2 for no. It will ask if the black was ok, press 2 for no, if the color looks ok, then press 1 when it asks if color is ok, then press 1 when it asks to start cleaning. In a minute or so, it will beep and tell you to press start. Once the sheet prints again, repeat the same sequence. I didn't even wait for the display, I would just press 2,2,1,1, each time it printed. At first the black section was blank, the one dash appeared, then two or three. I gradually gained on it until I had most of them working again, then let it set overnight and ran a few more cycles the next day and it finally all started working.

Want to print in color ink and not black ink.

These instructions are for Windows Vista users - I've never used XP to do this, but I'm sure it's similar.

Go to Control Panel/Printers and select the printer you want. Click "Select printing preferences" on the toolbar above. The options listed might be different for different printers (I haven't checked) but on my Dell printer I go to Advanced/More Options and under the "Complete-a-Print" section there is a checkbox labeled "Use color cartridge for all black printing." I imagine other printers have something similar. It comes out a dark grey/brown color.

Don't forget to uncheck it when you get more black ink!

Printing in black & white when color cartridge ran out

I had the same problem. Had no choice but to buy the colors I ran out to make the printer work. In order to avoid future problems and save on color inked I attempted to follow the steps of a previous posting, however, that did not work for me. This is what I had did. Print, select properties, advance, continue, check box - Black ink only. Remember when you decide to print in color you must reset your setting and take out the check from the - Black ink only.
