I just went through the Canon Help line for my fax problem - the critical part for manual recieve of faxes is hit that HOOK button first then the Black copy button.
I had same issue. We found a blog that worked for our machine. Go to Fax settings and navigate to RX Settings (receive mode settings). Select ECM and select "Off" vs "On" and then go back to RX settings menu and select another option called "RX Start Speed" at the bottom of the selection screen (I had to scroll down past the visible portion of the display). Select 7200 bps vs. the default setting of 33,600 bps. Then I had my wife send a fax from work and instead of picking up hand set, I pushed the "Hook" button on the front panel and then hit the "Black" button. It then recognized the transnission. It took about a minute then the fax came through for me on a couple different attempts.

I can fax out OK but cannot receive. The setting I am trying to achieve is manual RX but there is no response when a fax should come through. The options I have tried are to hear fax tones, press the black start button and hang up, or hear the fax tones from other handset press 25 and hang up. Neither option has any effect. Can anyone advise. Thank you, Jimmy.
