I have the same problem and I tried to clean the cartridges. No result.

Hi! I've got same problem. Canon userguide says that 5 flashes means the print head is not installed/not properly installed, or it is defective. Not yet sorted problem out - new print-heads are expensive!

This will only slightly help...my cannon printers waste tank was never actually full, there is just a built in counter system that figures when it might be getting to that point.
To reset the count before you cant print at all because of it:
A) Turn the printer off.
B) Press and hold RESUME, then press and hold the POWER button.
C) Release the RESUME button, Next press and release the RESUME button twice more while continuing to hold the POWER
button). The printer's carriage will move a around a bit.
If by some miracle we did that correctly on the first try, you are now in "Service Mode".
D) Press the RESUME button 4 times (clear waste
ink counter function). The light will change color with each
key press. Press the POWER button to commit the change, and return
to the top of the function selection menu. Press the POWER button again
to restart the printer.
Now for to check the waste pad...(excerpt from http://www.neilslade.com/Papers/inkjetstuff11.html)
If
you've reset the code first, then cleaned the pad, you're now ready
to print again.

I caved in and payed the Canon technician $10 for troubleshooting to find out that this code means there is a hardware failure if you are still getting the four flashing amber/orange lights on startup.
After visiting cartridge world I was informed that they have seen this numerous times before and are convinced the printers are rigged to fail. Essentially they told me that Canon created printers to die after a certain amount of use, which only makes sense considering my printer sat in the same spot for 5 years. How could have it suffered a hardware failure if it was never dropped, let alone moved.!?!?!
Their manufacturers manual says to replace your printer if you have this issue. Old printers, I was told, did not have motherboards, and since their invention it's become apparent that these companies have their hardware wired to fail after a certain time/amount of use. Typically people start to see the ink tank error, the printer head error/failure, and then the hard drive error/failure, which is EXACTLY what happened to me. All they want is for you to purchase new parts, pay for technical support, and pay ridiculous amounts to have parts replaced. It's that or get a 15% discount on a new model that probably costs upwards of $200.
Shame on Canon. I will never buy their products again. Save your money and get a laser printer where you can replace the hard drive in the printer if it "expires".

4. The indicator should be green.
5. Press and release the RESUME button , the indicator should be orange.
6. Press and release the RESUME button again, the indicator should be green.
7. NOW Release POWER buttons.
8. NOW Connect the printer to PC (USB cable).
9. NOW...I opened "Printers" and saw that a "copy" of my printer (i250 or i350) had been made. Make that COPY your default printer and all should work...
