Need some details on how fridge/freezer works to make a kegerator

I'm looking to turn my side by side fridge into a side by side kegerator and fermentation chamber. What I need to understand is how the freezer maintains its temperature. Does it A) have a simple thermostat so that it keeps one temperature. In which case, what is the knob for on the control box? B) have an adjustable thermostat, which is just placed in the freezer itself, operated by the long connecting rod?

SOURCE: whirlpool gold refridgerator light not working and is making funny noise

Had the identical symptoms with my Whirlpool Gold GS6SHEXNB00 side-by-side refrigerator. Had a technician come on site, indicated it was the "circuit board/ timer" (Whirlpool part # 1394052). Board is accessible from behind fridge (lower left side in a white plastic housing to left of compressor).

Swapped the board out (noticed a scorched circuit on the old circuit board). Lightbulbs now work, temperature readouts also good to go.

SOURCE: The temperature display keeps on flashing and will

Either the fridge's controller is trying to indicate a failure, or a temporary power failure has reset the fridge and it's demo mode. Demo mode is the mode used in stores where the lights and stuff will work but the motor doesn't run. Exiting demo mode may be as simple as unplugging it again for a few minutes, but you should look in the troubleshooting section of your manual to find out for you specific model.

How does a side by side domestic fridge work

New side by side layout is fridge side by side upper 2/3, with lower 1/3 pull out freezer
Normally in modern frost free systems only the freezer has the evap, and the fridge thermostat operates a duct, allowing freezer air to blow into the fridge.
The compressor runs until the freezer is satified, the thermostat powering the compressor is only connected to the freezer. If the fridge requires cooling but not the freezer, there's plenty of freezer air to circulate into the fridge after the compressor has turned off. Eventually the cmpressor will start again when the freezer temp gets too high.

On twin evap models, the fridge fan motor cuts out when the fridge gets to it's setpoint, so no air circulation through the fridge evap, though liquid refrigerant flows through it to the freezer evap. Likewise, if the fridge needs cooling but not the freezer, then the compressor will start but the freezer fan motor will not run.

Old school cyclic defrost systems had the thermostat in the fridge, and the freezer kept running until the fridge coil was low enough to make the fridge cabinet down to temp.

I have a 23' free standimg dispensing side by side ref. my ref is not cooling but the freeze part is working

when you open the freezer door do you hear the fan blowing?all that happens is the evaporator coil in the freezer gets cold, the evap fan blows the cold air from the freezer and into the fridge side, there are ducts on the bottom left side where the air return sto the freezer,if that's blocked the fridge will get warm, also if the fan is blowing depending on your model you could have a damper,it's in the fridge section up top where the cold air blows into, all it is is a door that opens and closes to let the air in when the fridge section gets warm and then it closes when it's cold enough,if the damper is bad it won't open and let the air in,sometimes it gets stuck in the open position and things start to freeze in the fridge section.if you can't figure it out send the model number and i can see what model you have, open the fridge door, look up on the right side near the ceiling and you should see a tag with the model number.good luck and have a great weekend.also from the bottom up in the freezer, remove the second bin of food and touch the back inside wall of the freezer,if there's frost or like snow on the back inside wall of the freezer you have a defrost problem, let me know what you find.

I have a dometic rv fridge, the freezer works not the fridge

you have to send the brand name and model number so i can help you.all that happens is the evapcoil in the freezer gets cold, the evap fan motor blows cold air from the freezer into the fridge side, depending on your model you could have a bad damper, this is a door that is in the fridge section,it opens and closes letting the air come in,try this, open the freezer door,if you don't hear the fan blowing you could have a bad fan motor, also touch your hand on the back inside wall of the freezer,if you have frost or like ice on the back wall you have a defrost problem, ice is biulding up on the coil and the fan can't blow the air over to the other side..if you need more help,do these tests and send the model number off of the machine and brand name, side by side or freezer on bottom, open the fridge door, look up on right hand side wall near ceiling or on ceiling, freezer on top look on left side in fridge section.

My freezer is working fine, but my compressor is hot to the touch. Is the compressor too hot? I have converted my freezer to a kegerator with a temp. regulator. I do not want to burn my house down or...

the compressor will run hot,but you should be able to touch it without burning yourself.(when you compress a gas, heat is generated as it turns to liquid and when it expands back to a gas it absorbs heat, the principal of a fridge...)

American fridge/freezer - fridge stopped cooling, freezer side ok

Have you pulled out the refrigerator and cleaned or used a vacum cleaner to get out the dirt and dust off the back of the coils, or if the coils are underneath, you need to get an inexpensive appliance brush for fridge, and clean the coils under the fridge, pull off the panel on the front bottom of the fridge, get a flash light and look to see if the coils are covered in dust....may just need to vacum and use appliance brush underneath...this should be done at least one a year, you will notice your fridge running much better and cooling back to normal.......hope this helps......

Freezer appears to be working properly - fridge is not cold

if this has only one evaporattor coil then you wil have to turn down the freezer too. first check to see if the if the manual damper motor is working properly. turn the tempertur to 0 on the frig and the damoer should close down. look to see if it did. then turn to 9 and you should hear the damper motor opening and feel air from the outlet.

Side by side kenmore

Have same problem on a 2 month old Kenmore 106.5794*700. side by side.
I can see ice / frost build up behind the lower baffle on fridge side. Does not seem to be any airflow from freezer side to fridge side. Freezer is extremely cold, it is about -23F. I read that 0F would be normal. Fridge side is warmish, running at about about +50F when it should be about +32 to +38F.

BTW: Ice pops started sticking to my tongue, thats why I noticed the unit wasn't working correctly.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the compressor is also running all the time as well. Either that or a Fan or something running. That kinda points to a stuck thermostat or some thing causing it to stick. I suspect that if the Freezer thermostat which is located in the Fridge compartment just may to rely on air flow from the freezer side via a duct, if this duct is blocked, the Freezer Thermostat misread the freezer compartment temperature and will always activate the compressor. Wish I had more details on exactly how the freezer thermostat works.

So after reading various forums on this it looks like a defrost issue causing the ice or frost build up or maybe just a faulty thermostat. Maybe there is a common circuit control board for these two functions?

As this is still in Warrranty I have a Sears Tech coming on Monday 14th Jan 08. I'll be interested to see what he does.
