Most of the time this indication comes from having a piece of paper lodged behind the paper drawer, blocking the paper drawer sensor, giving this indication. Remove the paper drawer and look into the cavity and you should be able to see the paper and remove it.

Check the sensor for tray #2. Another remove the tray #2 check for broken acturator and or broken tabs that go into the machine to indicate the printer draw two is closed. Lift the printer off tray two use just one and bypass does that work eliminates the circuit board of the machine.

Hi Anonymous,
I suspect you must have solved this one by now.
I can only assume you have something jamed inside. (your thoughts too I expect)
I would have thought removing as many panels as you could to gain access to the drawer unit to add paper might reveal where the problem might be!
Good Luck.
i have one xerox 5020 machine, there is display showing C1 error code in first tray and C3 error code in bypass tray .if open and close the machine will be idle and ready to cpoy. there is no paper pick up in both trays. please help to resolve the problem.
1. Power off the device.
2. Unplug it from the wall.
3. Leave unplugged for 5 minutes
4. Plug it back in and turn it back on.
5. Test
If it still does not sense the tray you will need to engage service.
Most C0900 range codes and specifically the 990 code refers to paper tray lifting. Pull out the paper drawers and check all the paper. Reload all the trays carefully. Then open/close the front door or turn off/on the machine to reset. If the code goes away great. If not then open all of the paper drawers, reset the code with the drawers OPEN. Then close each drawer 1 at a time waiting 30 seconds between each drawer closing. Once you close a drawer the code will come up within about 10 seconds. This will tell you which drawer is causing the issue. You can leave it out a bit so you can use the machine until you either find the issue with the tray or get a service guy out to fix it.
Good Luck
For tray linking to work, both Paper Size AND Paper type must be configured the same for both trays. You probably have the paper sizes the same but types could be different. The is no setting to make tray linking work.. it will do it automatically if the above settings are correct.
Sounds like the pick up rollers are worn or dirty.
You can try to clean them with alcohol.
When you pull the tray out the rollers
should be towards the front of the printer.
