When photocopying a dark streak, less than an inch wide, appears in middle of paper for the entire length. The streak looks as if something is rubbing on the paper and it apparently happens as soon as the paper enters the machine because if I stop the copying in the middle of the process, the paper still in the machine has the streak. I replaced the toner cartridge but the problem still exists. Any suggestions
You need to clean the rollers. consult the manual about cleaning the copier. if you don't have a manual, then get some methyl alcohol (any alcohol that evaporates completely will do). use a lint free cloth to rub a small amount of alcohol on all roller surfaces (accessible via pull-down compartments on front and back, usually).

fuser drum is bad. photocopier use electricity to transfer the toner to the paper, then it is heat fused to paper. it appears that the problem is occurring around the time that the toner is attracted to the paper.
Reference page 22-17 in reguards to cleaning the charge wire on the drum unit and page 22-16 for cleaning the document scanner. This is a link to your Brother MFC 8500. Hope this helps. http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Users%20Manual/UM_MFC_8500_EN_1354.PDF
If the dark streak appears on printed documents, cleaning the charge wire will correct it.
You'll have to open up the printer and clean everything off. You probably have a feed roller with ink on it. If you refill, use ONLY inks made for your brand of printer.
Replace the Drum Unit, Do you know how to rebuilt this unit, if not you can get an after market product, The Drum unit release is in the Middle of the Copiers you will see a door , open the door, then ONLY , and i do mean ONLY, touch the "Green" release lever for the drum take it out and replace it or rebuilt it f you now how, if this does solve it, which i am certain it will but, if it doesn't something is wrong with the fusing unit and needs to be dismantled, wish i could give you our contact info however, been informed not too so sorry. rules of fixya.com
Even a single grain of dust or a single strand of hair on the scanning glass will cause the scan head to perceive ink/image where there is none. Deffinetly try cleaning the glass using a good window cleaner, and a cloth that is completely clean, or even a peice of newspaper. If the black line remains, I would suggest taking it into a service center to have the scan head itself cleaned.
