Brother MFC 8500 Fax machine error "offline"

Can anyone suggest how to get the Brother MFC 8500 fax machine to stop displaying the "offline" error message, and accept faxes? It just stopped working out of the blue. thank you very much

There is a dial tone when I pick up the phone on the fax machine. Any other ideas?

  • meganmehta Jan 23, 2008

The error message says "Pls open cover" on the first line, and the second line says "OFFLINE". The last thing I did, (i think) was send a fax to someone.

  • meganmehta Jan 23, 2008

if I disconnect the cable of the fax machine, won't the memory disappear, and so I will lose whatever faxes are on the way to me, or on the way to someone else?

  • meganmehta Jan 23, 2008

    SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!

  • meganmehta Jan 23, 2008

Thank you SO MUCH, it is "online" again, after I unplugged everything and powered down and then plugged everything back in. thank you!

Hi there,

I think its the drivers for the modem on your machine that has died. Try reinstalling the fax drivers the machine. Also if you have multiple phones using the same line disconnect all of them first before you troubleshoot your modem.

The fax component of this machine is done via your PC so your modem drivers is probably the problem child. Go to device driver, navigate to the fax device and see if there's an exclaimation mark next to it. If there is that is your problem. You should right mouse click it then update the drivers from the install disk or download the latest drivers.

Good luck.

Smeags.

Try to pull the toner out ok wait min then put it back in see if erroer goes away is ther button on it to set offline online in menu im getting the manel for u give me a few

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2008

Power off the printer for 15 minutes and power back on again. If that fixes the problem then OK.
If not then go into maintenance mode -
Press and hold the menu/set key while turning on the machine. Wait until it comes completely up before releasing. It should say Maintenance in the display.

If not press function,*,2,8,6,4 within two seconds. It should say maintenance in the display. Or on some machines Menu,*,2,8,6,4 within 2 seconds.

Once you get it into maintenance hit 91 to do a parameter reset and than 99 to get out of maintenance.

If your fax machine is set to Easy Receive ON, it is more

sensitive to sounds. Your fax machine may mistakenly

interpret certain voices or music on the line as a calling

fax machine and respond with fax receiving tones.

Deactivate the fax by pressing #51 if you are at an

extension phone or press Stop/Exit if you are at the fax

    machine or an external phone.

Try avoiding this problem by turning Easy Receive to

OFF. (See Easy Receive, Page 5-3.)

Is your fax machine connected to the phone line? this usually indicates the connection status, thus, if your phone line is in...you wont have the "offline message".

hope this helps.

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2008

    hi again

what we can do for you now is follow this steps

unplug the phoneline from your faxmachine...

turn off your fax and unplug it...

wait for 5 minutes since we just need for the machine to power down...

after 5 minutes, replug your fax machine but dont turn it on yet.

re connect the phone line to your faxmachine and then turn on the machine...

so what does it say now?

Brother MFC 8500 receives faxes and does nothing else

Check to make sure that the PC Fax Function is turned off. I noticed after I connected the 8500 to my PC and installed the software, I too could no longer receive faxes and it was corrected after I turned this PC Fax function off.

The function is located by:

  1. Press the MENU button.
  2. Select Option 2.
  3. Select Option 1.
  4. Select Option 8 (PC Fax) and turn that function OFF.
Hope this helps!

Brother mfc 8500 clicking noises

If you open the cover and remove the toner/drum unit, you will see (on the left side as you remove) a small hole with two triangle teeth.
on either side of this hole are two small phillips head screws. this is the problem we had with our clicking noise. As the machine tries to turn the toner/drum, the innards of the toner are becoming harder to turn. So the part of the fax machine that fits in the hole end up stripping the teeth in that hole. If you have an old toner cartridge, you can remove the gearing from it (where the small phillips head screws are) and use it to replace the gearing on the newer cartridge. Or go buy a new toner cartridge.
