If there is noise on phone line machine reduces speed to enable fax to be sent. Have line check or try machine on different phone line to ensure it is a phone line problem.

You could try to listen for noise/crackles on lin itself, in australia we have a system for checking lines called folds (fax omline diag service) I guess all phone providers have one, contact carrier to see if your have same, all it is is a number we send a fax to and telecom send a report back instantly telling us line condition then we set fax attenuation accourdingly to eliminate problems that are simular to yours. Faxs start transmittion at 36000 bits per sec but step down to as low as 4800 BPS if line quality is poor

My MFC 8500 brother fax machine reports poor line condition when i try to use it with Magic Jack. Is there a solution?

You might try a better/faster internet connection or a faster computer to run it off of. VOIP phones have troubles handling faxes for this very reason.

Brother MFC-8500

what normally helps with brother is unplugging the machine for about an hour and plug it back in.
In your manual says how you can make a test print.
This will clear your internal buffer.

Also it might help un installing the machiine from your network and installing the software new.
try it and let me know what happens

Brother MFC 8500 receives faxes and does nothing else

Check to make sure that the PC Fax Function is turned off. I noticed after I connected the 8500 to my PC and installed the software, I too could no longer receive faxes and it was corrected after I turned this PC Fax function off.

The function is located by:

  1. Press the MENU button.
  2. Select Option 2.
  3. Select Option 1.
  4. Select Option 8 (PC Fax) and turn that function OFF.
Hope this helps!

I do not know who to operate the scanner function on my Brother MFC-8500

You operate it with paperport software which comes with the fax or can be downloaded on brothers site.

Brother mfc 8500 clicking noises

If you open the cover and remove the toner/drum unit, you will see (on the left side as you remove) a small hole with two triangle teeth.
on either side of this hole are two small phillips head screws. this is the problem we had with our clicking noise. As the machine tries to turn the toner/drum, the innards of the toner are becoming harder to turn. So the part of the fax machine that fits in the hole end up stripping the teeth in that hole. If you have an old toner cartridge, you can remove the gearing from it (where the small phillips head screws are) and use it to replace the gearing on the newer cartridge. Or go buy a new toner cartridge.
