"Most" newer monitors will let you know if the are no longer receiving a signal. Sounds like the backlight is burnt out. Try getting a bright (LED works best) flashlight and shining it at the screen at all angles to see if you can see any of what you were doing. If the backlight is on the fritz, either return it on warranty or buy a new one.
I just repaired one.... will likely require that you replace 3 X 220 uf 25 volt capactiros and 2 X 1000 uf 25 volt capacitors. can't miss them the tops are swelled up. but the monitor appears to work now... not bad for 5 bucks worth of parts.
If your picture was okay when it was running and the screen was not pinkish then the power board inside the monitor is in need of an overhaul. Your unplugging it and plugging it back in just did a temporary reset by discharging the capaciotrs for a bit. It more than likely needs new capacitors installed.
