There are supposed to be jumpers across the Pre_Outs to Main In's in the back when you're NOT using external amps. You could substitute short RCA cables.

speakers depending on the numbers of speakers your using 60 watts.

So if you are using one speaker of 60 watts and your using more than one, add all speaker watts and divide the speaker watts by the marantz pm74d watts, the weight on the marantz pm74d will be too much to handle too much speakers.

You have to isolate where problem is. Does a prerecorded disc play at normal volume levels? no? Check fade settings in menu. If yes, substitute another line level analog input from another device right at the recorders back panel. Test recording with that input and verify if recording level display can reach clipping level. If you have that and still have weak playback, again check for an in/out fade function being programmed. Also check volume selection in menu and try different settings, including 0.0. There is also a monitor mode to check input levels without using a test disc. Otherwise have unit checked by a repair business

check the back of your marantz player, some old marantz products have a buttom at the back saying system or intermal, if it is on the system side, the remote will never works.
