I recently purchased the HP 1600 color laser printer, and am very disappointed. I also purchased a full set of cartridges. After exactly one (1) page of printing it stopped printing stating the black cartridge was empty! I was able to override that error; but now every page has a smudge-streak running from top-to-bottom on the right side (as you're looking at the page) of every page, and the printer is giving me a loud clicking noise as it prints.
I could live with the clicking, but I need a solution to the smudgey problem.
Thank you.
HP 1600 is quite a decent little printer, so you shouldn't be dissapointed - if it's working properly, which clearly it's not in this case.
It seems that you have 2 problems here.
Firstly it shouldn't click loudly, so you need to be talking to whoever you bought the printer from.
The smudging - is probably a dirty fuser.
There are laser printer cleaning sheets, that will work quite well, but ideally it needs a little bit of dismantling to get at the fuser to clean the two fuser rollers.
I've seen lots of these with dirty fusers, and a clean with IPA does the trick.

Thanks for the swift reply. I bought it brand new. I think I may have resolved it, however. I moved the printer to a different table and it now works fine! I think it may not have been "perfectly" level.
Thank you again.
Did you purchase it new? If so, what's the warranty length on it? HP warranty is usually one year. Also, did you make sure all of the shipping clips and seals are out of the cartridges? The smudge-streak, is it black?
