SOURCE: Changing Drum
The drum is where the image is applied before being transfer to the paper. If the drum is wearing down the image will become poor. Changing the drum unit will make the image like new. So, yes you can run the drum catridge until you get a poor print out.
SOURCE: How do I replace the drum on a Brother hl 2040.
I have 'reused' the same drum three times and still prints like a charm.
Open the toner door and pull out the toner/drum assembly. Take the toner off the drum tray. Use a alcohol pad or lint free cloth and wipe the mauve coloured drum to remove the excess lint and toner collected on the drum. Rotate the drum with the white gear and keep cleaning until the whole drum is done.
Put the toner back in the drum tray. Clean the corona wire by sliding the blue tab back and forth 3 or 4 times. Put the toner/drum back into the printer and close the door.
After the printer does the self test the drum light will cone on again so then you need to reset the counters.
Open the door again
Hold the GO button until all 4 lights are lit up
Release the GO button
Close the door
Printer will self test and should extinguish all the trouble lights.

I also have the same problem. Purchased the printer about a year ago new. After we changed the first cartridge the orange/yellow light flashed drum.
Did you get any solution for this yet?
Yeap! Me too! It was all going so well... the drum light started flashing and we couldn't print. We even forked out for a new drum but it still doesn't work!
We just replaced the drum and the light continues to flash. Printer worked great for the first year then it's not worked since.
