Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps: Turn the printer off. Hold the 'go' button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on. Release the 'go' button. Press the 'go' button 2 times. Pause. Press the 'go' button 5 times. The toner light should be off. The paper light should be on. Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.

Hi Sunshine, I have HL-2140 printer. I have covered all possible sensor holes on the catridge. The black tab would not move after taking off the 3 screws. Toner is full and yet it shows "Toner" problem. There is no "go" button but only three buttons "Toner, Drum and Error"
Please advise me a solution to this problem but on HL2140.

Try this. Take the toner cartridge out of the drum it sits in. Look on the left side. You'll see a half circled groove with a tab inside it. If the tab is turned to the right(3 o'clock position) then you'll have to switch it to the left(10 o'clock position). This happens when you try to change the cartridge while the printer is ON. This is the most common solution to this problem.

Thank you very much, this works on MFC-7820N, which uses the same TN-350 cartridge as the 7220 apparently. The plastic part seemed delicate, so to avoid breaking it, I used needle nose pliers to get hold of it and move it with more support than the bare exposed end. No problem.

I've been searching for a long time for solution to the 2170 model by brother. I tried covering the sensor holes, etc with no luck, even resetting didn't work.
it was so simple, all i did was force the little tab on the left side of the cartridge back to the beginning, it seems to move on a half circle gear or something like that.
re-inserted the toner cartridge and it thought it was brand new!
wow, i could have saved myself a ton knowing this!
hope this helps. my exact model is the Brother HL-2170 (W) for wireless

Have the same problem. Have tried EVERY fix posted here-covering the sensor holes, the reset procedures, turning back the white dial to the 9 o'clock position, everything and nothing is helping. I've just installed a brand new toner and the toner light is staying solidly lite. Any other suggestions? I will NEVER purchase a brother product again. Have 2 Canon printers for 7 years-never a problem with either. Have had this brother 2070N for less than a year and nothing but one problem after another...

I have a mfc-7860dw and all I had to do was go into general settings. Go to 8. replace toner and switch the option from stop mode to continue mode and it keeps printing. It still displays low toner but it prints and everything works fine so I dont mind. Maybe mine is a newer printer or something and the last post was a while ago but incase someone goes online searching with this problem this is a solution that worked on my printer.

    Worked also on my HL-2140
Only thing i would add at the end of the directions would be:
turn printer off, then back on

because when I did the original procedure listed above as "Best Solution" (ie, not the full procedure above on "wordpress") - when printer was at the end, Windows then wanted to install a "brother maintenance driver".

obviously I didnt have - so I power cycled the printer, then all was fine.
i printed out settings before and after the reset - and found that this reset procedure really works well.

it reset the toner light, reset the printing darkness (when toner light flashes, printer prints lighter to save toner) and kept the page counts and drum life info - good.

Our Brother HL4040CN is saying "drum error slide the green tab on drum unit in each color" How do you do this

The green tab referred to on the drum unit slides a thin wire across the drum to scrape off any built-up toner that has accumulated.

To do this, first open the door to access the toner/drum cartridges (it's the same door you'd open to replace a spent cartridge). Remove one of the cartridges; the inside of the door will have a sticker illustrating the exact steps to do this. Once you've removed a cartridge, look to the end that is inserted first when installing it (the end opposite the one grasped to remove the cartridge). You should see a small green tab here. Slide it left and right several times to clear away any blockage. For good measure, vigorously shake the cartridge side to side to evenly redistribute the remaining toner evenly inside the cartridge. Replace the cartridge and repeat these steps for each one remaining.

If you still get an error after following these steps, remove each cartridge and shake it extra vigorously for at least 10 seconds. Sometimes the toner can clump inside the cartridge, causing the printer to interpret it as a blockage. This is especially likely to occur if you live in an area with a humid environment.

Lexmark c534dn unsupported cartrige

This error message appears on the printer screen when the printer thinks the wrong toner cartridge is installed. To clear it or identify a service requirement, follow the steps below. NOTE: If you succeed in resolving the problem at any stage during the procedure, you not need to perform the remaining steps.
  1. Open the top front cover of the printer. If the display DOES NOT read Close cover or Insert cartridge, the 32 error is not caused by the toner cartridge and printer service will be required to fix the problem.

  2. Make sure the correct toner cartridge is installed for this printer model.
    1. Check Lexmark for a list of compatible cartridges for your printer.
    2. If the wrong toner cartridge is installed, remove it and install the correct one.
  3. If the correct toner cartridge is installed, it may not be seated correctly. To ensure that this is not the cause of the error, do the following:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Reseat the toner cartridge.
    3. Close the lid.
    4. Power the printer back on and check the display.
  4. If reseating the toner cartridge does not clear the error message and the error started as soon as you installed this particular toner cartridge, the cartridge may be broken. You can check this as follows:
    1. Power off the printer and then reinstall the old cartridge. (You can also try a different new cartridge to see if that clears the error.)
    2. If the error does disappear, the problem may lie with this cartridge. Please contact the point of purchase, especially if the cartridge is brand new out of the box.
  5. If the error cannot be cleared by putting in a new toner cartridge or one that is known to be working, the printer may require service to fix the problem.

I have the MCF 7340. I am getting a message - End of Drum Soon. So, I bought a new drum ($120) and installed it. Now it says Drum end. and won't print. Ive turned the machine on and off several times,...

If you open the front cover of your printer where you install the toner cartridge and press the "Clear/Back" button with it open, an option comes up on your LCD Display that says "Replace Drum?" press 1 to reset it. That should fix your problem!

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

1. Verify you installed a NEW, out of the box, genuine Brother toner cartridge (TN360/TN330).

If a toner cartridge from another machine was installed (even if there?s still toner left in the used cartridge) or a starter toner cartridge (included with the purchase of a machine) was installed, the Toner LED will stay on and the message "Toner Life End" would continue to appear on the display.

2. Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly by following the steps listed below:

a. Open the front cover by pulling the tabs on the left and right side of the printer towards you.

b. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on a piece of disposable paper or cloth to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.

c. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock lever (blue tab) on the left side of the drum unit and lift the toner out. Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

d. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

e. Place the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into place).

f. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from right to left several times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

g. Reseat the drum unit into the printer pressing it in securely.

h. Close the front cover making sure it latches on both sides.

If the Toner LED is still on or the status monitor continues to display the message "Toner Life End" the printer will need service.

The printer has a one year limited exchange warranty. If the printer is in warranty, call Brother Customer Service at 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) for warranty options.

PRINTER WON'T ACCEPT NEW INK CARTRIDGE

From the Brother solutions website:

If the message "NO CARTRIDGE" remains on the LCD after you have installed the ink cartridges, then one or more of the cartridges may not be properly installed. Verify that the cartridges are installed correctly by following these steps:

Note
Cartridges that have already been installed are no longer vacuum-sealed, so it is very important that these cartridges remain upright. If a cartridge is removed from the machine and placed on its side, air may be introduced into the ink supply tubes. As a result, repeated cleaning will likely be required before normal print quality is restored.

  1. Unplug the machine from the AC power outlet, wait approximately 10 seconds and then plug it back in.
If the date and time appear on the display, the issue is resolved. If the display continues to show NO CARTRIDGE, continues to Step 2.

  2. Open the scanner cover by lifting it from the right-hand side until it locks securely into the open position.

  3. Remove the black ink cartridge by pulling the white plastic hook (locked over the edge of the ink cartridge) toward you, then lifting the cartridge out.

  4. The LCD should prompt you to install the black ink cartridge.

  5. Reinstall the black cartridge. Press down FIRMLY on the top of the cartridge until it is fully seated. Push the white plastic hook towards the cartridge to verify it is fully latched over the cartridge's top edge. Repeat STEPS 2 - 4 to verify each that of the color cartridges (magenta, cyan and yellow) is installed properly, then continue to STEP.

  6. Close the scanner cover. The unit should begin cleaning automatically.

Keeps showing J1 error, toner light is flashing

The J1 error means the toner cartridge needs to be replaced. Since you just replaced the cartridge, you should remove the cartridge and repeat the following steps.. Shake the new toner cartridge horizontally four or five times and then remove the cover. Slide the new toner cartridge in until it locks in place. It sounds like the cover may still be on the cartridge.
