Toner LED remains on with after new cartridge is installed.

I have the identical problem. I've repeated all of the installing steps many times and reset the printer to the factory settings (using the "Go" button.

Just used the guide to remove the blinking toner light. worked first time wish i had seen this before purchasing another 2040 which developed the same problem as the first. Bought another 2040 to use the new toner/drum i had tried to correct the problem on the first machine

Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps: Turn the printer off. Hold the 'go' button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on. Release the 'go' button. Press the 'go' button 2 times. Pause. Press the 'go' button 5 times. The toner light should be off. The paper light should be on. Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.

Hi Sunshine, I have a HL-2140 printer. This printer only three lights - "Toner, Drum and Error"
I have covered all possible holes on the catridge but the printer still shows me "Toner" problem
Please let me know an appropriate solution for this printer.

  • sapra Apr 25, 2011

Hi Sunshine, I have HL-2140 printer. I have covered all possible sensor holes on the catridge. The black tab would not move after taking off the 3 screws. Toner is full and yet it shows "Toner" problem. There is no "go" button but only three buttons "Toner, Drum and Error"
Please advise me a solution to this problem but on HL2140.

  • bobtherealto Apr 28, 2011

Does the button trick work on the HL-2140 also? I've tried it several times but had no luck. Toner light still stays on.

Try this. Take the toner cartridge out of the drum it sits in. Look on the left side. You'll see a half circled groove with a tab inside it. If the tab is turned to the right(3 o'clock position) then you'll have to switch it to the left(10 o'clock position). This happens when you try to change the cartridge while the printer is ON. This is the most common solution to this problem.

Thanks! Works with the MFC-7220 and TN-350 also.

  • windowsexplo Apr 06, 2011

Thank you very much, this works on MFC-7820N, which uses the same TN-350 cartridge as the 7220 apparently. The plastic part seemed delicate, so to avoid breaking it, I used needle nose pliers to get hold of it and move it with more support than the bare exposed end. No problem.

I've been searching for a long time for solution to the 2170 model by brother. I tried covering the sensor holes, etc with no luck, even resetting didn't work.
it was so simple, all i did was force the little tab on the left side of the cartridge back to the beginning, it seems to move on a half circle gear or something like that.
re-inserted the toner cartridge and it thought it was brand new!
wow, i could have saved myself a ton knowing this!
hope this helps. my exact model is the Brother HL-2170 (W) for wireless

Have the same problem. Have tried EVERY fix posted here-covering the sensor holes, the reset procedures, turning back the white dial to the 9 o'clock position, everything and nothing is helping. I've just installed a brand new toner and the toner light is staying solidly lite. Any other suggestions? I will NEVER purchase a brother product again. Have 2 Canon printers for 7 years-never a problem with either. Have had this brother 2070N for less than a year and nothing but one problem after another...

Great solution, I have a HL-2030 and the trick from Sunshine3240 worked just fine. The fact that it had just blocked on the toner light was driving me crazy. How do you find a solution like that - trial and error?

I have a mfc-7860dw and all I had to do was go into general settings. Go to 8. replace toner and switch the option from stop mode to continue mode and it keeps printing. It still displays low toner but it prints and everything works fine so I dont mind. Maybe mine is a newer printer or something and the last post was a while ago but incase someone goes online searching with this problem this is a solution that worked on my printer.

    Worked also on my HL-2140
Only thing i would add at the end of the directions would be:
turn printer off, then back on

because when I did the original procedure listed above as "Best Solution" (ie, not the full procedure above on "wordpress") - when printer was at the end, Windows then wanted to install a "brother maintenance driver".

obviously I didnt have - so I power cycled the printer, then all was fine.
i printed out settings before and after the reset - and found that this reset procedure really works well.

it reset the toner light, reset the printing darkness (when toner light flashes, printer prints lighter to save toner) and kept the page counts and drum life info - good.

New Brother HL-2140 Laser Printer, Ive followed all instructions, to no avail! HELP?

Brother HL 2040 Printer. None of the above worked. The Brother advisor suggested pressing the Go button three times, then a Print sheet came out showing the problem wasn't low toner. (which I already knew). Then he asked me to uninstall the printer from my Mac and reinstall it. (Apple sign, preferences, printer

This is a very good solution. However, it should add "until all lights are off" after the the second step "Release the 'go' button"
