I have the identical problem. I've repeated all of the installing steps many times and reset the printer to the factory settings (using the "Go" button.
Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps: Turn the printer off. Hold the 'go' button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on. Release the 'go' button. Press the 'go' button 2 times. Pause. Press the 'go' button 5 times. The toner light should be off. The paper light should be on. Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.
I am so impressed! I just used your little technique and I was steamrolled! I would bow to you if you were here. Thank you so much for being my Printer savior. I was just about to tear it completely apart again and they usually never work after I am finished. Thanks many times over!

Button trick works on the HL-2035 too, just done it - many thanks!! ;-)
Hi Sunshine, I have a HL-2140 printer. This printer only three lights - "Toner, Drum and Error"
I have covered all possible holes on the catridge but the printer still shows me "Toner" problem
Please let me know an appropriate solution for this printer.
Hi Sunshine, I have HL-2140 printer. I have covered all possible sensor holes on the catridge. The black tab would not move after taking off the 3 screws. Toner is full and yet it shows "Toner" problem. There is no "go" button but only three buttons "Toner, Drum and Error"
Please advise me a solution to this problem but on HL2140.
Does the button trick work on the HL-2140 also? I've tried it several times but had no luck. Toner light still stays on.
It worked on my failed hl-5370 dw 's. I was pulling my hair. (OOPS, dont have much)

Wow! You are amazing! Thanks so much oh Jedi Master of printers!
worked like a charm!
This trick works also on Brother HL-5370DW. As dirkbikegirl said, I bow down to you Sunshine3240. You are definitely a superstart in extending help to the needy. With this economy, saving is a big thing for me now. Thank you very very much; you are a savior.
This trick saved my HL-2150N at the moment I was ready to trash it.
Many thanks
Thank you very much, i tried this after covering the sensor holes of toner cartridge on my brother printer HL 5340-D and it worked wonderfully. thanks alot.
It worked!!!! Thanks so much! Just saved the day :)
your a lifesaver! thank you very much. I was about to buy a new printer

Try this. Take the toner cartridge out of the drum it sits in. Look on the left side. You'll see a half circled groove with a tab inside it. If the tab is turned to the right(3 o'clock position) then you'll have to switch it to the left(10 o'clock position). This happens when you try to change the cartridge while the printer is ON. This is the most common solution to this problem.

thank you this was very helpful after trying everthing else that didn't work this was the magic cure thank you again
Thank you so much! This worked when nothing else would!
Thanks! Works with the MFC-7220 and TN-350 also.
Thank you very much, this works on MFC-7820N, which uses the same TN-350 cartridge as the 7220 apparently. The plastic part seemed delicate, so to avoid breaking it, I used needle nose pliers to get hold of it and move it with more support than the bare exposed end. No problem.
Thanks so much! It worked like a charm on the HL-2140 as well.
Yep, that worked. Finally, thank you!

I've been searching for a long time for solution to the 2170 model by brother. I tried covering the sensor holes, etc with no luck, even resetting didn't work.
it was so simple, all i did was force the little tab on the left side of the cartridge back to the beginning, it seems to move on a half circle gear or something like that.
re-inserted the toner cartridge and it thought it was brand new!
wow, i could have saved myself a ton knowing this!
hope this helps. my exact model is the Brother HL-2170 (W) for wireless
Have the same problem. Have tried EVERY fix posted here-covering the sensor holes, the reset procedures, turning back the white dial to the 9 o'clock position, everything and nothing is helping. I've just installed a brand new toner and the toner light is staying solidly lite. Any other suggestions? I will NEVER purchase a brother product again. Have 2 Canon printers for 7 years-never a problem with either. Have had this brother 2070N for less than a year and nothing but one problem after another...
After reviewing this archive, and speaking with a service representative. I have posted a solution to better explain the toner and reset ability.

Great solution, I have a HL-2030 and the trick from Sunshine3240 worked just fine. The fact that it had just blocked on the toner light was driving me crazy. How do you find a solution like that - trial and error?
You do not know how much I appreciate your help. It worked GREAT!!!! Thanks a million times..
I have a mfc-7860dw and all I had to do was go into general settings. Go to 8. replace toner and switch the option from stop mode to continue mode and it keeps printing. It still displays low toner but it prints and everything works fine so I dont mind. Maybe mine is a newer printer or something and the last post was a while ago but incase someone goes online searching with this problem this is a solution that worked on my printer.
This works for the LC 51 cartridges, as well.

This worked for 2140 also! Thanks!
Worked also on my HL-2140
Only thing i would add at the end of the directions would be:
turn printer off, then back on
because when I did the original procedure listed above as "Best Solution" (ie, not the full procedure above on "wordpress") - when printer was at the end, Windows then wanted to install a "brother maintenance driver".
obviously I didnt have - so I power cycled the printer, then all was fine.
i printed out settings before and after the reset - and found that this reset procedure really works well.
it reset the toner light, reset the printing darkness (when toner light flashes, printer prints lighter to save toner) and kept the page counts and drum life info - good.

New Brother HL-2140 Laser Printer, Ive followed all instructions, to no avail! HELP?
Brother HL 2040 Printer. None of the above worked. The Brother advisor suggested pressing the Go button three times, then a Print sheet came out showing the problem wasn't low toner. (which I already knew). Then he asked me to uninstall the printer from my Mac and reinstall it. (Apple sign, preferences, printer

Great solution. The customer has 8 Brother HL-2070Ns. This was the third one with this problem. They are all fixed now. Thank you for this.

Great solution!! It solved my problem on a HL-2040.
Thanks.
It was very helpful and i have solved problem. Thanks a lot
This is a very good solution. However, it should add "until all lights are off" after the the second step "Release the 'go' button"
Thanks a lot, it worked great for me also...
I tried a number of these suggestions and none worked. I called Brother as suggested above, and they gave me a different suggestion than any mentioned here. Their suggestion worked. 1-877-BROTHER
