INSUFFICIENT POWER - USB PORT If you get an error message "Insufficient power to operate USB device" when you plug a USB device into the computer's USB port or the un-powered USB hub that is attached to the computer's USB port, then this device is drawing excessive current that the USB port cannot supply. The maximum output from an USB port is 500mA. In case such as this, you need to purchased a powered USB hub and connect this hub into the computer's USB port and then connect the USB device into this powered USB hub.
I deleted the email but still have the hard copy, so here goes. This worked with my 14 year old hp and a Dynex USB-Parallel cable.
1. Plug the printer to the USB-parallel printer cable and turn on printer.
2. Plug USB end to USB port on you computer.
3. When you do this, the computer will recognize the cable.
4. Go to Control Panel/Hardware/Device Manager/USB Controllers.
5. Make a click on the + icon and check if you have USB Printing Support
(If you are not able to locate it, unplug cable from USB port and plug it
back in, so you will see something that's new on the Serial Bus
Controllers).
6. Make a double click on USB Printing Support to open a new window
and look for device status. You should see a message "This device is
working properly".
Now you need to open a new com port for the printer:
1. Go to Control Panel and click printers & faxes.
2. You will see an icon there with the name of your printer, make a right
click over it and go to Properties.
3. Select the Port tab and on the display menu select Virtual USB Port.
If you have more than one select no. 1 first. If it does not work, select
Virtual USB Port, and so on. (The virtual port will depend exclusively on
what the printer requires).
4. Click Apply and try to print a test page.
I first hooked this up putting the USB cable into a port on the front of the computer and it worked fine. I then moved it to the back of the computer and it did not work, so I just had to go to the process again until I found a USB prt that worked. It has worked just fine ever since. This solution was given to me by Dynex Prodlucts customer care team. I am no techie and don't understand any of it, but I can follow instructions and it was successful. Gool luck.
There might be a problem with your computer as well. Try printing with paralell cable to make sure the interface works at all. If the patalell-port works fine, try updating the printers firmware. Still problems ? Try with a different computer. If if works fine with another computer, then you know theres something wrong with your first computer. Good luck.

With the Lexmark printers communication subsystem you MUST let the driver ask for you to plug in the printer. DO NOT plug the printer into the USB port until told to do so.
To fix a fouled install: (1) Uninstall the Lexmark drivers in Add Remove Programs (2) Shutdown the computer (3) Disconnect the printer from the USB port (4) Restart the computer (5) Run the Driver Installation software (6) Cancel ALL attempts by windows to auto install the printer (7) When the software asks for the printer connect it and continue
on a windows system, go to printers and faxes, delete all icons there. unplug the printer, reboot your computer, then as soon as your computer is up, connect the usb cable... now wait..... after about 5 mins, check printers and faxes if it has an icon for your printer, if it does then print a test page, if it does not show an icon, try another cable, try another usb port or try it on another computer entirely...
Windows XP/VISTA (do not install the CD) 1)Plug the cable into the USB port on your computer. 2)A prompt that says "Found New Hardware" will appear. Windows will then install the USB printing support driver automatically. You do not need to install the driver from the CD. 3)Plug the cable into the printer. 4)If your printer is already installed, click on Start, then Printers & Faxes. Right click on the printer you are connecting to and click on Properties. Click on the Ports tab and check the ‘Virtual printer port for USB’ port. Click OK. 5)You should now be able to print.
With XP, the biggest clue is to FIRST plug the cable into the usb slot, THEN the other end of the cable into the printer.
that happened to me with my cannon ip4300 so I installed the driver again so I had 2 drivers installed on the computer. The computer named the seconed instalation cannon (2) .
