You will likely have to install a new cord reel. Cord reels have a long tightly wound steel spring which can fly out causing injury if you attempt to take it apart.
It is the ground wire. If it broke off from the plug, replace the whole plug. There should be a place to attach the white wire to the third round prong on the new plug
I suggest a trip to an appliance centre to have the plug checked out as dimming house lights indicates a hugh short probably in the plug or lead
Safety first
A prong is usually a piece sticking out. Your vacuum has a power cord that plugs into the wall outlet. The metal pieces coming out of the plug that go into the wall outlet are called prongs.
Hello Mr. Stein- well there is a few different options you could take.. 1st being you can change the plug on it if you wish. I know home depot sells them for about a buck or two. although this is a quick and cheap fix, if your vacuum is still covered under warranty the altering of the cord/plug will void your warranty unfortunatly. another option would in my opinion would be the best option, would be to take the vacuum in to a vacuum store, perferably an authorized dealer/ service center for your vacuum brand, and have them change out the whole cord. changing the whole cord would limit the chances of the cord of the cord/ plug ever shorting out. A reason why your plug did break off like was probably because it was being removed from the socket by the cord it self and not the plug. with almost ever company that I am fimiliar with. the plug prong breaking is not a warrantible issues, Because it is not a manufacture defect.
I hope this is helpful! and if you have anymore questions please dont hesitate to ask :]
Maybe you got the wires crossed between the two cords. Vacuums have polarized plugs and if wired imcorrectly can definitely cause the vacuum to not work. Try switching over.
In other words, consider current wires as A1/A2 and B1/B2. Disconnect, then connect A1 to B2 and A2 to B1.
