Please check the R230 service manual HERE.
For the R230, the left most light is the ink status indicator. When this is flashing, one of the cartridges is very low/out. You need to replace the ink. Remove the CD/DVD tray if it is in use. Then open the printer cover. Press the ink button on the control panel. The cartridge carrier will move to the ink status location to indicate the first empty cartridge. With each press of the ink button, the carrier will move to indicate the next empty cartridge until it moves to the replacement area. Once the cartridge carrier is there, you can replace all of the empty cartridges. Make sure to seat the new cartridges fully. When done, close the cover. Press the ink button again and wait until the unit recharges the ink system.
If you recently put in new cartridges and the light is still blinking, then make sure that you pulled the tape completely off the cartridges, seated the cartridges fully and used the correct Epson cartridge in each slot. (If you used refilled cartridges, try new cartridges.)
I hope this helps.

(on some inkjet printers, if the new ink cartridge isn't correctly identified, there are contacts that you can clean. Use lift-free clothes (coffee filters) and bottled or distilled water. Dry well before reassembling. I've done this on HP printers; check the service guide for the Epson Stylus R230.)
