Need to print black only but low colour cartridges cause error

Most likely you cannot. If you do not have any of the colour cartridges with ink in them, the print heads will dry out and when you want to print in colour you will not be able to print in colour.

I have inserted a new black ink cartridge (34) and get an error message 'left cartridge missing, insert black or colour photo cartridge' have peeled label off and reinserted several times but still...

Make sure you are inserting a genuine Lexmark cartridge. Try to insert a different known working cartridge, maybe your old black cartridge, to determine if your new cartridge is faulty. If inserting your old black cartridge gives you a message saying "very low ink" or something to that effect, then most probably there's something wrong with the new black cartridge. Have it replaced with a new one from the store where you bought it from. You may also contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for assistance.

I have a HL4040CN copier. When the message comes up that ink is low, how can I tell what color ink cartridge needs replacing

You're just going to have to keep printing until you see which cartridge is getting dry. It'll be either the black one or the colour one. This way you won't buy the wrong cartridge. If you print black text and it starts to come out grey then it's the black cartridge that needs to be replaced. The same with colour, if the picture looks faded then you'll need a new colour cartridge.

This message may be resolved by resetting the unit. Please follow these

the left hand side.

2. Push down on the end of the black cartridge. A clicking noise will
be heard.

3. Slide the cartridge out of the holder towards you.

4. Push down on the end of the colour cartridge. A clicking noise will
be heard.

5. Slide the cartridge out of the holder towards you.

6. Once both cartridges are removed, unplug the power to the printer
(without turning it off).

7. Reconnect the power cord.

8. Turn on the printer.

9. Open the cover. The carriage that holds the ink will move to the
left hand side.

10. Make sure the orange cap is off of the bottom of the black
cartridge.

11. Place the black cartridge in the bottom of the printer.

12. Slide the black cartridge back until is cannot go back any further.

13. Push up on the end of the black cartridge, a clicking noise should
be heard.

14. Make sure the orange cap is off of the bottom of the colour
cartridge.

15. Place the colour cartridge in the bottom of the printer.

16 Slide the colour cartridge back until is cannot go back any further.

17. Push up on the end of the colour cartridge, a clicking noise should
be heard.

Please note that the colour cartridge will stick out further than the
black cartridge.

Close the cover. The printer should make some noise for a few moments,
and then return to standby.

If the message persists, to clear the low ink-warning message, press and
hold down the button for at five seconds, and then release
it. This will disable the ink detection until that cartridge has been
replaced.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Cannon MP220 displays colour ink vol unknown

For the Canon Pixma MP220, I kept getting a message saying "Col Ink Vol Unknown" after refilling and replacing a cartridge. After reading some of the other responses it appears as though Canon cartridges contain internal chips that prevent you from using them after they have been refilled. However, I tried a few things and this is what worked for me.

1. Insert your refilled Canon cartridge like normal, close the lid.
2. The Error message "Col Ink Vol Unknown" should still appear.
3. Use the "Menu" button to scroll to "Maintenance" (press "Menu" 8 times to find it), then press "OK" to conduct a "Nozzle Check" and a coloured test will print out.
4. The Error message will still appear but you will be able to print using colour AND with black and white. For some silly reason the Canon Pixma MP220 won't print using black and white if there is no coloured ink...

Hope this helps!

Epson sx200 printer, wont print black ink only

Many printers especially Photo ones also use colour even when printing Black. so you do need to replace the spent colour cartridge.

If you only need to print in black get a B&W printer not a colour one.

Black and Colour Ink Low Messages - Canon MP180

You have to look online for the canon tool to reset the ink counters. When you refill these cartridges you have to run this program in order to re-use the cartridges.

My printer will not accept a new black cartridge.

ITS NOT THE BLACK CARTRIDGE!!! Try changing the colour cartridge and see what happens. When a 9600 checks ink levels it does the black ink first, then the colour, if the colour is low it goes back and checks the black again but will constantly give an error message for the black cartridge. Sounds bizarre but try just the black cartridge in with no colour. print a test page in black only, if that does not print then it is a fault. Also make sure the driver is updated!!!

Black Printer cartridge

It will tell you the colour is low, regardless of the format in which you are printing. I don't believe Canon provide a way for you to disable this for their printer range, so you'll need to put in the new colour cartridge to get rid of this error. (you should however, be able to print whilst receiving this message)
