Cannot recognize ink cartridge

Used printer very little over period of 6-ish months, but previously worked very well. Now it won't recognize the magenta cartridge. Have only used OEM cartridges. When error received, ink tank was about 1/2 full and had not been touched or monkeyed with in any way. Replaced cartridge anyway -- still won't recognize cartridge. What now? The machine is locked up.

Printer wont recognize yellow ink tank change the chip that works in other tank still wont work.

My Canon Pixma MP600 has the exact same problem with the magenta ink cartridge. I, too, substituted the cartridge even though it wasn't necessary. Guess I'll have to get the machine serviced. Thanks for the advice.

I've had my printer for a year and have always used "generic" ink cartridges with no problem. Now, with a new magenta properly installed, my Epson is not recognizing it and won't print. Help!

    Sometimes CAN'T RECONIZE CARTRIDGE.
Sometimes TWO INK TANKS OF SAME COLOR (Black)

repeated tries finally allow me print.

  • Anonymous Sep 09, 2008

I am having the exact same problem with magenta cartridge, under the same circumstances...I don't want to trash this printer...I just bought new cartridges.

  • Anonymous Sep 10, 2008

I have the same problems - either won't recognize the ink cartridge or will think there are two of the same color installed. I tried cleaning the contacts with alcohol; it didn't help. I can't use my printer at all. My husband's older Canon printer does not have those annoying chips in it and he has had no trouble with his at all. He can also purchase after-market cartridges, which are a lot cheaper than the expensive Cannon brand and they always work.

  • adriansterri Oct 11, 2008

I'm getting an error U150 can't rocognise print cartridge.

I've never let the ink run out or used non canon print cartridges.

Its not that old or does that much work.

  • Anonymous Oct 14, 2008

The darn thing won't register my ink cartridge. I don't want to go fix it if it's cheaper to buy a whole new printer - but what a waste!

  • BlHeron Oct 26, 2008

Same problem with black and multicolor cartridge on my HP. Sat for a bit and now it either says "Check Cartridge or door open. Neither is true, replaced with new cartride and still not working. This has happened many times before, but after half a dozen times taking it out, cleaning both the cartridge and slot and replacing it it usually works. Now sitting here with $100 worth of useless ink and a printer that won't work.

Same problem. Magenta cartridge. Never messed with. Recently all new Canon brand cartridges.

  • Anonymous May 24, 2009

The same problem with C (Cyan original patron of Canon) with the PM500.It seems to be a technical problem of the firm.

I had the same problem. I was using original brand cartridges and it was still not working. Here's how I got it to work. I recommend doing each step and then trying to print a test page to see if it is working.

1. I used a Q-tip with Isopropyl Alcohol and cleaned the gold contacts on both the cartridge and the mating contacts in the printer.

2. Then from the Setup Menu, I found a menu called Tools. From there I ran "Align Print Cartridges".

3. From the same menu I also ran "Clean Print Cartridges"

4. I then ran a few test prints by going into the Setup Menu and then choosing "Print Report" and then selecting "Self-Test Report". It prints grid patterns in black & white as well as magenta, yellow and blue. The black grid pattern had some missing lines until I printed this report a few times.

5. I made a few photocopies and now the printouts no longer have large stripes of missing ink as it did in the earlier steps.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

The cleaning of the cartridges and the pins with isopropyl alcohol has done it. Working now as it should. Thankyou very much.

  • Other times if by replacing new ink cartridge the problem for error code still occurs, it might be the pin on the print-head has lost the alighting, this will require for Canon to service to alight back the pin on print-head in order for the printer to operate smoothly again.
  • There are 4pins for each ink cartridge on the print-head. Anytime if one of the pins has problem, maybe missing (lack of one)or scatches, by replacing new ink cartridge wont help too.
  • (Maybe check with your own nearby technician if by any lucks they can help to rescue your printer, which I hope Canon does not have further enhancement on their printer with other Unique features to prevent users from using 3rd party technical support.)

Don't know whether this will help many people or not. My iP5300 wasn't registering ink cartridges either (magenta). I tried several different generic cartridges with replacement chips. Finally thought I'd just try with genuine canon cartridges and all seemsto be fine. I've read so many times people saying that genuine cartidges make the differnence - I'm begining to agree with them. Can't imagine that will solve all the problems listed here though but if not tried already might be worth trying before trying to clean/replace print head and/or buying a new printer......

SOURCE: cannot recognize ink cartridge

I have about 6 canon printers with a 3in 1 using PG40 and CL41. I have never encountered the problem you have. I have looked into some other sites and noticed a number if CLI-8 cartridges being replaced by Canon. I think there are only 2 probable problem areas, he cartridge or the software you are using. I suggest you call up Canon and complain about this problem. Seems like you got the printer 6 months or so ago. You should able to get to do something like replace the printer or cartridges. I'm assuming that you don't refill or have your cartridges refilled so the contact points should not be messy w/ ink. You can try cleaning the contact points on the cartridges and printer. But I'd call Canon and explain to them the situation and see if they can solve your problem. Solve I'm implying is to replace your cartridges or printer. Let me know if this helps.

Check ink cartridge on right

Yes - if they are not used they will dry up and be unusable.
Unfortunate but you need to replace them.
For future ref - IF they will not be used in 4 - 6 months
pop them out and put scotch tape on the head where ink comes out
and that should keep them good for several months..
I have done that and close to a year later - was fine.
Hope this helps :)

Doesn't recognize the color ink cartridge

Good day!Your cartridge is the problem..even if its new or original if the printer never detected or sense your cartridge's presence..then that error will appear..

So,try to change a while or borrow if you have friends there just for reading or proven the problem..

It tells me the cartridges are empty, then when i open the lid it says no cartridge! its not been used for a few months, and i refill them with generic refills...any thoughts? tried the switch off and on -...

Hello ,

Start by opening your ink cover and read the LCD screen; this will alert you as to which ink cartridge is not being recognized; make sure the cartridge that it is telling you is empty has been changed.

If the unit is still not recognizing the cartridge you have changed, follow the steps below.

  1. Unplug the power cord for the printer unit.
  2. Open the ink cartridge cover and remove all ink cartridges.
  3. Close the ink cartridge cover.
  4. Plug the power cord back in.
  5. Reinstall the ink cartridges.

Make sure that your ink cartridges are full and that they are genuine brother inks; refills or generic ink cartridges are not guaranteed to work properly.

Thanks,

Pat

HP printers - remove and check cartridge. (Use it or lose it)

There is no solution for HP Printers being used very lightly - meaning "not for months" etc.

As a result, if you are stuck in this predicament - an HP inkjet, that you only need every few months - I instead suggest you set a calendar entry for once a week or more and run a test page.

The printer will "hopefully" not dry out by being periodically used - and the ink "wasted" will result in a LONGER cartridge life than if you had to throw out a cartridge.

There is also a time period, or sensing of the cartridge, that results in a wasteful cleaning cycle in which it pumps ink "down the drain", and I'd like to know how often to test print to avoid that.

My solution to my most recent problem was to "give up" and throw a new (black) cartridge on it and take the barely-used one out.

Printer says it's out of ink, but it's not!

if you refill the same cartridge that was in the printer
the printer would recognized the cartridge as being out off ink
you need to install another different black cartridge
the printer will identify this as a new cartridge
you then reinstall the previous cartridge back in
the printer will now recognized it as a new cartridge

Error code: U150 The following ink tank cannon be recognized (Cyan)

U150 ink error fixed!

I too was getting the error for unrecognized ink cartridge. Then the little green circ board fell out of the end of the ink cartridge and it hit me that maybe if I put in the little green circ board from the old ink cartridge of the same color, then maybe the ink cartridge would be recognized. It worked! So don't throw out an ink cartridge that still has ink just because of that error and hold onto your empty cartridges in case you need the little green/gold circ boards.

This works!
