This printer is certainly not a pos. You have just invested $50 in a new print head, so the print head should not be the problem. If nothing has changed since you replaced the print head, the old one may not have been the source of your problem. I am assuming the colour cartridges are not empty, not clogged, have the seal off, and are perfect. I would try to copy in colour, just to make sure the colour is not printing. If you still get only black, then it is probably your contacts, and this may seem crude, but remove the print head, get a knife and scrape those contacts on your carriage, they are flexible, so dont worry. Give each column a couple of scrapes. Put your print head back in there, lever down, cartridges in, and see what happens.

You could clean the black ink cartridge. For this you need to remove the black ink cartridge which is present in the printer. In order to clean the laser or scanner block you could use a cotton swab as it would fully clean the dirt. You need to clean the grime and the dried ink present in the printer. This would remove all the hindrances which prevent the ink from flowing. Cleaning the printer heads would also help to solve the problem.

Re cannon mp730 all in one -I keep getting ?wrong cartridge? error msg. when I followed the solutions that had been posted a month or two ago, removing the cartridge holder, etc. I found that the ink was...

Your print head may be damaged. You might consider replacing it.

Canon suggests pulling the ink wells and also pulling the print head and then reinstalling the whole assembly. They consider this a reset. It is also suggested to replace the printhead which the ink cartridges are housed in. I have done this to remedy bad printing and am considering this $50 purchase as I am dealing with "wrong cartridge" message also. Some have said replacing the printhead remedied this code problem. BUT, i did read one person who said this did NOT work. Right now I am debating whether I should put $50 dollars more into this machine....although this printer has been excellent and many agree.
Comments: Apr 17, 2010 - As a follow up I did fix my "Wrong Cartridge" message by replacing the printhead, I worked and worked at cleaning the old one but finally gave in and anted up the $50. This fixed it! Long live DIYers!

Canon MP730 not printing. Printhead cleaning doesn't help.

You may need new print heads. They are around $50. Or, you could do this: Take the print head out of the printer, and run warm water from the tap (not high pressure), over the ports for about 5 minutes. Ink will drop out of the jets. Dont touch the electrical contact end of this head. This may clean the head enough so it works again. If not you need a new print head.

Canon PIXMA iP4200 - not printing in colours

hi i am a Canon certified tech for this machine.the orignal problem you had most likely was not your printhead but since you washed it most likely it is ruined. the problem most likely is the purge unit. the purge unit is the unit to the far right of the machine. this unit cleans and purges ink from the ink tanks to the printhead. to do this it uses 2 pads one for black and one for color. these pads can be flushed with water to soften up any ink. i would also replace the printhead which can be ordered by calling 1-800-OK-CANON or by going to their website. one other tip, refilled ink cartridges cause more clogging of printheads and purge unit then OEM ink. this is because the ink is thicker then the OEM ink. hope this helps to clairify.
