Either defrost timer or Refrigerator thermostat, both located in the ceiling of the refrigerator, can give you long enough off times to actually cause thawing and then refreezing. Feel the rear wall of the freezer, half way down to see if a layer of frost has formed on it. This can indicate a problem in the defrost system which has three components.

The only way to be sure which of the two components is the cause would be to catch it in the thawing phase (not running). Tapping hard on the refrigerator temperature control knob can make it come on if it is the source of your problem. Good Luck

My freezer is not as cold as usual. Ice packs are not freezing and food that I have put in is not frozen. The ice maker is also not making ice.

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

We have a Whirlpool gb22dk refrigerator freezer. The bottom freezer keeps meat frozen but will not keep sea food ice cream bread ect frozen. This fridge came with our house which we purchased 2 years ago...

1st.Check the freezer door gasket for any place it maybe torn or not making a 100% seal when you close the door. That would make temperature drop. 2nd.take off bottom kick plate so you can look under the refrigerator.Using a flashlight make sure there is not alot of lint / dust stuck on the coils .If there is remove it carefully and you will see temperature lower. PLEAS RATE THIS!

The refrigerators accumulate ice

the fridge distrubutes cold by air movement. A overstuffed fridge can have trouble. There is a fan that blows a controlled amount of freezer air over to the food side, altho when this goes you usually have frozen freezer and food too warm. Make sure the air is allowed to move.

Freezer works fine but the fridge won't get cold

It sounds like cold air from the freezer isn't making it to the fridge compartment. This can be cause by a several things. The damper that lets air into the fresh food side is stuck in "closed" position, the temp sensor (t-stat) isn't working properly, the evaporator fan (in the freezer comp above the coils) isn't working to blow air up to the fresh food section. In some situations, the defrost cycle for the freezer section isn't working and the coils have frozen into a block of ice and air can't flow over them properly so you get not cold air to the fresh food section but the freezer still stays cold due to the block of ice.
