Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Ge refrigerator is not cold enough and ice is not working

Freezer is not cold enough to freeze, ice is not working, but water is working, I can feel ice in machine, but most of my food is not frozen or semi frozen. Refrigerator part feels warmer also, not as cold as usual. Motor does run, feel cool air coming out of vents, but not enough to keep cold.

What is the model number?
The ice maker will only run if the freezer is at the correct temperature.
Do you see any ice buildup on the back wall of the freezer or behind it?

GE Side by Side Model No TPXX24BRDA... Freezer is keeping things cold but not frozen and no ice so that makes sense if its not cold enough. We just cleaned out the coils. Its about ten years old. ALways worked great. No ice build up at all anywhere.

OK, first pull the unit out from the wall and make sure the condenser coils and fan are clean from any lint buildup. If that is OK, then you will need to replace the cold control. Here is the part to order.

Okay we did pull it out and cleaned out the condenser coils. They were a mess! How do you replace the cold control? Are you local or can you suggest someone local? My refrigerator has the wood grain panels built on top of it to match the cabinets so we really want to save it if possible. Thanks SO much for your help!

OK, if it was really dirty, give it a day and see how it runs. 80% of the time with the type of problem that you are having is from dirty coils. I don't know where you live but I am in New Orleans. If you tell me where you are located I will check with my supplier and find a reputable service tech. But I am sure we can work thru it together. Also, if you should need me and I am not on FixYa you can get me thru my new website at and use the contact form or the repair forum from the links on top of my page.

I had a similar problem where the refrigerator side was not cooling well but I could feel very little air coming through the vent in the top left corner.I blew hot air from a blow driver into the vent for about 1 minute which melted ice that was hanging from the bottom of the vent cover.Cold air started blowing harder thru the vent and cured the problem.

SOURCE: Refrigerator is not cool

First you need to measure the temp in the frig. Place a thermometer in a glass of water overnight or in a jar of pickles. If the temp is not below 40 deg F it is too warm. It could be anything from the fan running too slow, to frost buildup due to failed or failing components in the defrost circuit. If the thermostat is all the way up and everything else is working properly it could be the thermostat. Make sure nothing is blocking the places where the air enters and exits th refrigerator from the freezer. Please let me know what you find.....Eric

SOURCE: GE Refrigerator/Freezer not cooling

Loss of coldness is common with compressor related problems....relay and overload(simple fix), loss/leak of refridgerant(need a cert. tech). need to check the compressor and see if its this by pulling the unit out and removing the back panel, place your hand on the compressor and see if it feels like its running....if not probably just a relay, if it is running, could be a more serious problem dealing with sealed system.

GE ice maker

If the freezer is cold enough to freeze food hard, look for a problem in the water line, water inlet solenoid valve, or possible ice build up on the ice maker itself that does not the allow the ice maker to complete it eject cycle and start a new ice making cycle.

Ge bottom freezer not freezing

Check to see that the evaporator is not covered with layer of ice. The latter serves as an insulator and prevents freezer temps from going down to about zero degrees. If the defrost heater/timer is defective that will certainly be a cause. Since the freezer air is not cold enough to freeze, then the refrigerator temps are also high. Using a digital thermometer will confirm this.

Leaking door gaskets can also be responsible for higher internal temps

Hotpoint CTF15ELD top freezer refrigerator - freezer O.K. refrig too warm

It's likely the door was inadvertently left open, and the cold air passages from the freezer have built up enough ice that the cold air from the freezer has no way to enter the refrigerator. Check the cealing of the refrigerator. If you can see or feel ice in the passages between the freezer and fridge, you can probably solve the problem by finding a safe temporary home for your food, and leaving the refrigerator unplugged overnight.
