When this printer estimates a cartridge is empty it will indeed stop printing and ask for a promt from you. I believe your particular printer will ask you to hold down RESUME for 5 seconds to continue printing. The resume/stop/reset button will be marked with the symbol below. Once this prompt has been given printing will continue regardless of the estimate.

One of the following messages may appear on your the control panel display

Color or Right Print Cartridge is not intended for use in this printer
Step one: Remove and inspect the cartridge Step two: Make sure the cartridge is compatible Step three: Clean the cartridge contacts
1. Open the printer lid and wait until the carriage stops moving, and then unplug the power cord. 2. Remove the cartridge and place it on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up. NOTE: If you are removing a tri-color, photo, or gray photo print cartridge, try to clean the contacts quickly enough that the cartridge is not outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long. 3. Dip a clean cotton swab in distilled water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. 4. Clean the print cartridge contacts. Do not touch the nozzles. 5. Clean the contacts inside the carriage, inside the printer. 6. Either let the cartridge sit for ten minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a new swab to dry it. 7. Reinstall the cartridge, plug in the power cord, close the printer cover, and then try again to print. Step four: Reset the printer Step five: Replace the cartridge Step six: Print in backup mode Step seven: Service the product
the answer to your question is yes,it can still print with only one cartridge installed. If you do not have a replacement cartridge, and the quality of your printouts is not a concern, you can still print in ink-backup mode. Consider the following guidelines before printing in ink-backup mode:
If you remove the tri-color cartridge, printouts will be in grayscale.
If you remove the black or photo cartridge, the product will print more slowly and the colors in the printouts will vary.
press OK button to clear the error message like cartridge missing after removing one cartridge.
If the Cartridge and printer alignment is successfull and you are still not able to print in color, mostly the Color print is disabled in your pc
Click on START Button Click on CONTROL PANEL Open Printers and Faxes folder Highlight the Printer icon for Deskjet Right click on the printer icon and choose Printing Preferences Under Printing preferences, you will find Printing mode - It must be on BLACK or GREY SCALE, Change to COLOR/ ALL try printing.
Your cartridge nozzel is probably clogged up. Try cleaning the cartridge using cleaning mode on the printer. If cleaning the does solve the problem. You may need a new cartridges.
Backup mode means printing with one cartridge. If the printer tells you "cartridge failed", it probably doesn't recognize it. You can try removing it from the printer and gently wipe the electric contacts on the cartridge with a dry cloth. Turn the printer off, turn it back on and reinsert the cartridge. If the message is still there, I suggest you buy a new color cartridge. You can also go to the store where you refilled your cartridges and ask for their opinion, they may be able to help too.
Hi i have simular problems i think. i did getting a fault on my cartridge and the fault message i getting tells me that something is wrong with cartridge and printer will print in backup mode by takeing away the black cartridge, i did try to change to a new black cartridge and the same problems appear.
After some investigating of this problem it seems to be a kind of delikat on my printer, inside where the black cartridge should be placed there are a metall "feather/spring" this has losen at one time i dont know when. but this sharp metall "spring" have been pushed in when replacing cartridge and made a hole in white elektrical connections for this particular cartridge and may damage this connections, maybe this has happend with yours printer as well.!?
And know how to fix this, with no support left at HP there arent so much to do i believe i have to use cartridge with triple color or trow this one away and buy a new one. Use and trow away with blessing from HP.
hi,
Ink-backup mode lets you continue printing with one print
cartridge when the other print cartridge has run out of ink.
Ink-backup mode allows the printer to operate using only one print cartridge. It is initiated
when a print cartridge is removed from the cradle.
Exiting Ink Backup mode
Install two print cartridges in the printer to exit ink-backup mode.
