Question about HP Photosmart C4280 Aio Printer
I have a MacBook Pro and a HP Photosmart c4280 printer. The printer and copying works fine but it won't scan!! the LCD screen on the printer says "USB not connected" when it is!! HELP please. Thank you.
I had the same problem. The thing is I was pressing the scan button on the printer and getting the lovely "USB not connected" message. However, if you open the printer icon in the dock (Mine is "HP Photosmart C4200 series") and click the Scanner button in the upper right hand corner, then click "New Scan," voila! presto! and all is right with the world again.
Yes, it is obnoxious that HP made a defective scanner button, and I may download the driver again when I get a chance. But yay for quick fixes!

Same problem here. Pressing scan button on printer resulted in "USB not connected" message. Combination of Solutions #2 & #3 worked for my Mac OS X and HP Photosmart C4200 series All-in-One printer/scanner/copier:
1. Verify this is the right solution for you by checking label on CD "HP Photosmart C4200 series" against "About this Mac" window from the apple toolbar.
2. If Mac OS X version is a later version than the CD, download the file "HP_Installer_PSC4200_v9.7.1.dmg 1/1 (187.98M)" from the link under "Step 3: Obtain software:" on the following link:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-55008-2&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3192753&os=219&lang=en
(NOTE: I NEVER CLICKED THE "Download Only>>" BUTTON, I JUST CLICKED THE FILENAME ABOVE, LISTED UNDER "Download file(s) to install later:".)
3. Wait for download. After downloaded, click on icon "HP Installer" in new "HP Software" window and follow prompts. For installation, wait. Then wait some more.
4. Make sure scanner is powered on and plugged in. Press "scan" button on scanner and... SUCCESS!!!
Background: Before taking these steps, I had already installed the HP software from the CD that came with my printer. The CD is labeled for Mac OS X v 10.3.9 and 10.4. I have Mac OS X v 10.5.2 Leopard software and, yes, I got the new printer for free (via a rebate) from the Apple store. So the HP CD was compatible with an earlier version than my system (10.3.9/10.4 versus 10.5). I went to www.hp.com, software and driver downloads, & couldn't find my way through. I looked at the links in Solution #3 and selected the "Download file(s) to install later:" file on the second link, because the "Download Only>>" looked like it was probably redundant to the software I had already loaded from my CD (?); anyhow I didn't need it for my situation. Don't know how long the wait for installation - it was long.
Thank you to bandana_gyrl & Urbnx for your help - I've been frustrated with for some time. Now I can scan!

Windows Vista provides a basic set of scanning drivers, also referred to as Windows Image Aquisition (WIA) drivers, that you can use as an alternative to scan a document when you cannot scan using the HP drivers. You can still scan with one of the following methods:
Method one: Scanning with Windows Photo Gallery
To scan a document using Windows Photo Gallery in Windows Vista, follow these steps:
Method two: Scanning with Paint
To scan a document using Paint in Windows Vista , follow these steps:

Ok here is the answer you have all been waiting for - look on the CD that came with any HP printer for the mac and you will see that it is for 10.3.9 and 10.4. I bet you dollars to donuts you have the new 10.5 leopard software and you got the new printer for free from the apple store.
All is not lost - go to the hp website at www.hp.com and on the left side you will see a grey menu that says software and driver downloads click on it and type your product. The version right now is 9.7.1 once you get all the way through. DO NOT INSTALL THE HP INSTALLER FILE - it is the same as the CD.

Once you have loaded the software, try this
Issue When the scan button is pressed on the product, nothing happens. The scan button does not work correctly.
Workaround Choose one of the following options to scan without using the scan button.
Option one: Scan using Windows Fax and Scan
Option two: Scan using Paint
), click Programs, and then click Windows Fax and Scan.
NOTE:
The Windows Fax and Scanoption is available in the Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editionsof Windows Vista. If you have the Home Basic or Home Premium edition ofWindows Vista, skip to Option two: Scan using Paint.
Cause
The drivers in the Windows Vista operating system do not support button press functionality on the product.

Do you have Leopard installed on your Mac? I've had the same problem since I installed Leopard.
These are two drivers developed by HP that might solve your problem. Both were developed after the release of Leopard, so I'm assuming they were made to fix the scan problem.

I haven't had the chance to check them out yet, but please let me know if they work out for you.

Most likely the usb port is not recognized by your system. Check that out in System Preferences, and make sure it's enabled, or activated. Also, plug in something else into that usb port. Last thing, swap usb cables.

Hey all. i have a windows with vista hp computer and my scanner says usb not connected all the time. for me the trick is to scan from the hp solution center program on my computer instead of pushing the scan button on the actual printer/scanner device. you can download the solution center from the full features download on the hp website for the photosmart.

I had the same problem but with c4250 instead of c4280 and an hp laptop, not a a MacBook. But I left the USB plugged in, I went to Devices and Printers, clicked the printer that I want to scan from, and then it should have an option that says "Scanner Actions". Under that, there should be links that say "Scan a document or photo" or "Scan Settings". Click the first one and then click Scan in the box that pops up. That should work!

Re: HP Photosmart C4280 All-in-One setup
Okay... it took forever but here is the fix for your All-in-one problems.
First off, everything was working for my printer except for the scan button (it said that the USB was not connected), but I have used this same fix for several device driver issues now and it has worked every time.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository and look for a folder named hpojscan.inf_c876c5d8
Click on hpojwia.dll (Type: application extension) and copy the file.
Go back to C:\WINDOWS\System32 and paste the hpojwia.dll file (if you look before the paste, the file is not listed).
Then go to Device Manager and you should see "HP Photosmart C4200 series" with an error. Click on it, go to Properties- Driver tab- update driver and the Install Wizard will start. You can then put the regular installation CD into the computer and click Okay. That should fix your problems!
This fix, though time consuming, has worked for several USB driver problems for me. You simply have to figure out the correct driver folder in "FileRepository" and copy either the DLL Application Extension file into "System32" or copy the Inf file (Setup information) into the C:\Windows\inf folder- To determine which you need, simply search to see if the DLL or inf files in the correct FileRepository folder are present in the System32 or inf folders, respectively, and then update the driver in Device Manager.
Hope this helps everyone!

HP has a driver you can download to correct this problem. I've had a Gateway and a Dell.
HP is the best!

I had the same problem. I almost gave up on the f****** HP ****- but I reopened the stupid HP solution center, and clicked on the device list on the right- yes I know I only have one device, but than it started to work-although the stupid device still displayed error that it is not connected to USB while scanning!
And yes by the way- when it displayed error that it is not connected to USB it still printed files from word.
I hate HP, I will nevery buy any **** from them again, and people writing this stupid SW should be shot.

I followed #5 and it worked fine--including after I turned the printer/scanner off and then back on again--THANK YOU a million!

You can call the HP Support (877-690-9305) They will help you to resolve the issue Support For Hp Printer

As SOLUTION #5 (Mitchlong) suggested. Use the HP Solution Center application link. Go to Start menu, then Programs or All Programs, then your HP Solutions folder, then look for HP Solution Center (the icon has a black disc with letters 'hp') and click it. This opens the Solution Center window with a Scan Document button.
This worked for me. I did not even need to restart my printer.

i have the same problem! HELP!
Mine prints fine off my iMac, and copies, but when I try to scan I get "USB not connected."
I am having the same problem. Everything works fine except the scanning. I wanted to find out what was wrong so I Google searched, "USB not connected" and "HP printer" and this is the first link on the list. I'm going to try to figure out what is wrong with this.
I uninstalled the entire HP photosmart c4280 software, per HP instructions. Then disconnected the USB cable and the printer line cord, also per instructions. I reinstalled the HP Software, then connected the USB cable, per HP instructions. So far so good. The scanner worked. But after I shut off the computer and rebooted, the same message appears "usb cable not connected." Now what? Must I uninstall the HP software every time I wish to scan?
Same problem, using Windows XP.
Just got off the phone with HP. The rep said that this printer has "USB problems" and they are shipping me a new one.
My new HP Photosmart C4280 will print from my i-Mac but not scan. When I press the "scan" button on the printer, I get the message "USB not connected". I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable; switching the computer on and off several times, and connecting the USB cable directly to the computer rather than through a USB hub, but nothing seems to work.
try to scan, but keeps on saying "USB not conected" HELP!
HP PHOTOSMART C4280 ALL-IN-ONE PRINTER, SCANNER, COPIER

Same problem, not getting any help from HP.
trying to scan, it says usb not connected urrgh
Printer works fine, computer will not see scanner. Screen on printer says "usb not connected,". I tried uninstalling then reinstalling, which is the only solution offered in the manual. But during the installation process there seems to be a problem recognizing the printer at the end. Yet the printer prints fine, it just won't see the scanner. I really need to scan!
I have the same problem USB not connected
I reinstalled the software, nothing happened
I have tryed to scan the aliegn page as it asked for at beginning but no help.
I've checked all connections to printer to make sure they are connect. Turned printer off and back on but still doesn't help.

i have no problem printing however, whhen i try to scan it says that the USB is not connected. however, I've checked and rechecked and pulled what little hair i have out of my head and don't know what is wrong. I need to scan some important documents by the morning! it's 1210am already. I have 9 hours LOL
Me too!
Hi--
I downloaded the HP drivers (I have Leopard). When I came to 'set-up' and selected Photosmart C4280 & clicked continue, the icon disappeared and I got the message that my printer could not be found. My only option then was to quit.
Suggestions? Thanks.
I was having the same issue (after previously not having any issues). My macbook has two usb outlets. They both work (I have used my mouse out of both of them)...however, it seems that the printer only likes the rear one. I switched my mouse and printer and now the scan works.
omg mine does this everytime I want to use the damn thing.
Ahhhh i have the same problem n it won`t work what should i do ??causee i don`t have the CD .. thankss people =]
Hi All!
Yea this is completely frustrating and has consumed almost 2 days. I have MAC. OS X (Leopard) running 10.5.6
I have 2 of these HP C4280 and neither will scan!
Both printers print and copy but will not scan from the printer or the computer. giving the messages "usb not connected" and "error: unable to initialize scanner"
I have manually uninstalled and reinstalled the 9.7.1 software 4 times ( repairing the permissions each time)
I was passed to Apple tech twice, then returned. Now apple says they will revert my system to 10.5.2 . Why is that necessary? How come it doesn't work!
Have also bought a shorter cable....
hi guys, im running vista, and i have the same problem,(i know i should get a mac) but just try downloading the drivers from www.hp.com and now my printer works like new, but i cant seem to solve a persisting carterage jam... hmm, anyway, bye!
this is ridicules, what a rip off!!!
I installed the drivers from the link but this didn't fix my problem, i'm going to try updates for the mac and see what happens.

I have the same problem.. with my HP Photosmart C4240 Printers saying 'USB Not Connected'. However, it seems that sometimes it works and sometimes it does not work. It never works when it's an emergency... like now!!! :) Help!
when i try to scan it says the usb cable isnt connected, yet it is.the usb cable works fine when i print but just not when i try to scan something
I am using a WinXP configuration, but the identical thing is happening on my macine. From the HP C4280 I am getting the "USB not connected" error." However, when I updated the software to a new print driver, I was at least able to get a program to import/insert a scan using TWAIN settings. e.g. from within MSWord2003.
error message on the hp4385C when scanning that says usb cable not connected....but it is....
