PRINTER GOES IN A SLEEP MODE AND WILL ONLY PRINT AFTER YOU UNPLUG AND PLUG BACK IN. SOMETIMES IT WILL WORK FOR FOUR OR FIVE PRITTING AND THEN STOP TO BE UNPLUGED AGAIN.

you might have to change the settings for the switching time into stand-by. plz have a look into the manual which describes these settings (zero seconds are possible)

The printer status showing offline is more then likely a computer issue then the printer. On the printer, use the menu to select "reports" and then select the printer settings report. If the printer prints the report, then the printer itself is working, and it is a communication issue between the printer and the computer. If you are connecting to the printer with a usb cable, then try moving the usb cable on the computer to another port. If this does not work, try deleting and reinstalling the printer.

I had the same problem. Try shutting it down by holding the off button and unplugging it for a few seconds from the back of the printer. Wait a couple of minutes and them plug it back in. Make sure you are connect to a wall outlet and not a power strip or surge protector.
If this doesn't work, hold down the #6 key while cord back from the printer.
Hopefully one of these two would work.
If it doesn't you can go to the HP site and start a chat with a tech who will walk you through a solution.
I had the same problem, and got resolved.

Hi,
Remove and replace the power cord from the unit.
Wait approximately for 35 seconds for the scanning assembly to "walk out"(move to ready position)and then quickly remove the plug again.
Repeat step 1 and 2,three or four times until the head (scanner lamps)moves approximately 1 inch away from its normal resting place.
Replace the plug and let the product fully finish the boot cycle.
If it does not resolve the issue or the issue returns, upgrade the product firmware may help.Visit this url http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=72628&lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=66359&taskId=135
and then upgrade the firmware.

Here's what HP had to say about mine:
1. Print out a self-test page and check your firmware version.
Compare your version to this web page:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-82657-2&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=4063&product=3752456&sw_lang=
If your version is different, upload the new firmware in accordance with the directions provided.
If your version is the same, go to these steps:
1. On your printer, press * and # simultaneously
2. Press 1, 2, and 4, in that order. (This sequence should be the same for yours, too)
3. Select the underware menu (I know, sounds funny)
4. Select the System Menu
5. Select System Mode Time Out (you may have to scroll for a few screens)
6. Set this to 0, press OK
7. Turn Off/On Printer.
I just reset mine this morning and will find out tomorrow whether or not this is the fix, but it seems to be so far.
best of luck!
