Plug the phone line cable into the line port and wait for an incoming call and don't answer the phone, the fax machine should do the rest. Let me know what happens.

On the Fax part of the printer do I hook up a telephone line to line in port and Ext out phone port or just line in port to make the Fax work

You would connect the phone line to the LINE connection on the Printer/Fax.

The EXT OUT port would be where you would connect a telephone that uses the same line - for example on a desk nearby, etc.

Fax will not work--no dial tone--copier works ok/phone line is ok

Make sure your phone line for the fax is correctly plugged into the Line Port of the printer and not the EXT port. For a more comprehensive guide on how to setup the Lexmark X4270 for faxing, please refer to the Lexmark X4200 Series User's Guide.

Purchased yesterday HP LaserJet M2727nf. Everything works except it won't receive faxes. Philip Schwartz, Esq.

Make sure the display says Auto or Fax. It should not say Manual.
Also check to make sure your phone line is plugged into the "Line" port and not the EXT or Phone ports. These are the 2 most common issues with not receiving. Especially on new machines.

Does not recognize phone connection --can not send fax or receive fax--no connection. phone line is direct--works good

Hi. Here are some things you need to check: 1. Check the physical connection. Make sure the phone cable you're using is still in good condition. No obvious defects. 2. There are two phone ports behind the printer- Ext and Line. The phone jack from the wall should be plugged in to the Line port of the printer and not in the Ext. port. 3. Make sure to enter your Fax name and the correct Fax number in the printer. These are the basics on how to setup the printer for faxing. Hope these helps.

Can't receive a fax but can send one. My machine model number is MFC-9700

There are three different receive modes for your MFC. You may choose the mode that best suits your needs by pressing the receive mode repeatedly until the LCD shows the setting you want to use

if the setup is only for faxing no other telephone lines on the line then select fax only.

if there is a telephone on the same line your gonna want to select Ext.Tel/Tad

if you are wanting to control the phone line and must answer every call yourself by uing a external phone select manual

manual you can use with distinctive ring as well so you can know what is a fax and what is a phone call.

let me know if this works or not please describe your setup if further troubleshooting is needed.

Can't receive FAXes

If this is a new fax machine just setup, make sure that the telephone wire from the wall jack in plugged into the rear of the printer in the port named "Line". Not "EXT".

Fax problem

I want to make sure I understand this completely. You get no dial tone from the fax machine when hooked up to VOIP. In the past, was there an audible dial tone from the fax, or did it just dial silently and give you an error if there was no tone? When you said you got a dial tone by connecting a phone to the ext phone port of "the machine" did you mean the fax machine? If you get a dial tone by running a phone through the fax machine, then the line is good. I have used a fax machine over Sunrocket before they went defunct, which used the same technology base as Vonage - so it should work. If you used to get an audible dial tone when using the fax, and no longer do, and you are geting a dial tone on a regular phone that is connected to the ext. port of the fax machine, then the problem has to be in the fax machine itself, not the VOIP. If you can verify that, we can go from there.
