The Lexmark C520 series, and other Lexmark color printers use a transfer belt that has an internal `chip' that monitors use, and also triggers end of life. There is no way to reset this chip, you simply have to replace the transfer belt, and the machine prompts you for the internal reset at that point.
Sorry I could not be more help. I have several good belts myself that are useless.

All my printing has ink spodges all over it. How can I stop it happening. The printer is a Lexmark C522

Hi,
The problem could be contamination on your printer, Try cleaning your printer or making sure no residual toner is on top of the transport belt (the black vertical belt) Also check out this article about the different print quality issues that can happen and how to resolve them.

How do I replace the transfer belt on a Lexmark C522n printer?

Hi,
To replace the transfer belt open the front door, as if you were to replace the toner. Once the front door is open then remove the photoconductors one by one make sure not to touch the surface of the photoconductors also make sure not expose them to light for a long period of time. Once you remove the 4 photoconductors then you should be able to see the transfer belt, just unplug the connector at the top, then release the two plastic flaps on the side and lift the transfer belt. That should be it.

I'm getting a message about "transfer belt life warning" on a LEXMARK C522. I thought this should have done loads more copies before it needed replacing.

What is new to you might not be so new. Sometimes these things can sit on a shelf for months and you buy it not knowing how long it has been there in that store. Being that the belt is possible plastic it wears even if its not being used then it gets old and cracks now you have to have it replaced. Your best bet is to always check to see how long the equipment have been sitting on the shelf before you buy it.
