When the big 5 PGBK cartridge is "empty", but the 8 BK cartridge is full, the printer will not print. Why can't the printer use the 8 BK cartridge?

    Thanks.

It won't default to the small one...I emailed Canon support; this is the response I got.

The reason for the two different black ink tanks is for the different types of printing your unit is capable of. They are not intended as backups to each other. The larger black tank is pigment based, and is primarily used for standard black text printing or output. The smaller black ink tank is dye based like the color inks, and is used for photo and graphics output. They are designed to complement each other, allowing the printer to produce the best possible black text output or photo quality as appropriate.

I have mp210 and want to change my printer to just black and white as I don't do much color printing but my cartridge run's out and I have to keep replacing my color cartridge as well?

1. In Windows: Go to Start>Devices and Printers>Right click on your default printer. Select printing preferences.

2. In the area that reads: Additional Features in the middle of the window, you'll see a selection that reads: Grayscale Printing Put a check in that box. This will print everything in black and white.

3. Go down to the bottom of that window and put a check on the box that reads: Always print with Current Settings.

4. Click Apply

5. Click OK.

Once you are just printing in black and white, the only cartridge you will have to replace is black ink-unless you change it back to color in the future-then you will have to replace the color cartridge as well when it is low.

If the black ink runs out does the printer automatically use color ink to print black?

Hi. When you are printing in black but "black and white" is not selected in the printer "properties", the printer will use some of your colored ink to print grays. If the black ink goes out, it will give you an error and will not print using colored ink even if you are printing black only. Hope this helps.

My Canon Pixma MX850 has two black ink wells, one large and one small. During printing, the printer pulls from the large well first and so when it's empty, I can no longer print in black ink even though...

The small black tank is called "Photo Black Ink Cartridge" and is usually only sed when printing color pages or photos. There is no way to bypass that. Use the ********* ink since it is a cheaper cartridge judging by volume. Sets can be purchased on ebay for very low price. Link below:

Re Canon 2600 printer.I recently purchased a black Ink cartridge and replaced the old one. A week later the color cartridge also shows empty even though I hardly use color. Can I not print in greyscale...

Hi,
Please follow the instructions below from Cannon support page...

Setting the Ink Cartridge When printing, you can specify which ink cartridge to use. This is convenient if one of the ink cartridges becomes empty, you can continue printing by specifying the ink cartridge that still has ink. Note:
  • When the following settings are configured, Black Only is disabled. The color ink cartridge is used to print.
  • A type of paper other than Plain Paper is selected for Media Type on the Main tab.
  • Borderless Printing is checked on the Page Setup tab.
  • Canon recommends that you use the ink cartridges installed in the printer and not remove them until the ink runs out.

You can set the Ink Cartridge Settings from the Maintenance tab in the printer driver.

Canon IP4300 - the two black ink cartridges

No!

The large cartridge is used for text only printing.
The smaller black cartridge is used for black in images such as pictures.

You have a "C (cyan) M (magenta) Y (yellow) and B (black) color system. This actually saves the color inks for you. If the Black was not there, you would need to make a composite black from the color inks.

QUESTION FOR DON_FARR

whenever you print greyscale what actually happen is that the printer mixes the red, blue and yellow to give the output in gray scale. See if you mix red, blue and yellow ink in the right proportion it gives you very close to black. just try to print your greyscale with your black ink finished you will still get the same print quality as when the black has ink in it. Or find a way seal the nuzzle of the black in and print your greyscale. check what results.

The dont know how to switch the ink cartages

The large black ink cartridge is used for printing text and other general black printing. The small black cartridge is used when printing graphics and other fine details. Each cartridge feeds to a different part of the print head, which is used for different purposes.

Have changed Ink Black and Colour... Stil getting error Message.

Make sure the tape covering the hole on the bottom of the black cartridge is removed. and then go into the printers folder and right click on your printer icon and go into the properties of that printer and there should be something in there to tell it that you changed cartridges and you can also print a test page as well.

Does not recognise the smaller black ink cartridge

This machine is not meant to switch between the two black cartridges. The large one is used when you are using black only, and the small one is used when you are printing in color.
