Our neighborhood lost power during a snow storm. When power was restored my fax machine revealed an Error 79. I shut off my machine for approximately one minute thinking that it would reboot itself. Did nothing but show Error 79 again. I tried a soft reset by pressing Menu/Enter and then simultaneously the * button and the # button to enter the menu it would not go any further than the Error 79 message. The machine would not allow me to go into the menu.

The only fix I have used is a cold reset there is a firmware upgrade you can try if this does not work.
TRY THIS:
Turn the machine off and unplug for 1 minute or so.
Plug the unit back in:
Press and Hold the enter/menu key and asterisk key
Turn ON
Hold the enter/menu key and asterik key while the unit powers up. Once you see the message "Permanent Storage Initialization" let go of the keys.
Hope this helps

You need to check the cable that goes to the wall.. Make sure it is plugged into the plug on the printer that says "line" or "wall" if it is plugged into the one marked phone... it will most likely not work.
After that (if it doesn't work) go through the setup procedures the manufactures manual has for that model
If you lost it your in luck HP has everything you need here:

suspect either worn ADF(automatic document feeder) pickup roller or there is a jam in the ADF unit where the paper feeds to the scanner.
