"Invalid Imaging Unit" after replacing toner cartridge

Hello there. I have a problem I hope to find a solution to. My 2 year old Samsung CLP-550N Laser Printer displays "Invalid Imaging Unit" when replacing a toner cartridge. I’ve been using the starter cartridges that came with the printer since the beginning. I don’t print very much so it has lasted me this long. So I bought $450 in replacement cartridges at Best Buy and proceeded to replace them. I replaced all the cartridges at once, turned the printer back on and received an “Invalid Imaging Unit” error. I turned the printer off, returned the old cartridges, turned the printer back on and it started without error. I then tried replacing the cartridges one at a time. I found that after putting in the new BLUE cartridge and turning the printer back on; it throws the error. All other cartridges went in fine. I now have all but the blue cartridge replaced and would like to get my new blue cartridge in there but the printer won’t accept it without returning the “invalid Imaging Unit” error. I tried researching the problem on the web myself and found a bunch of other people with the same problem. One person stated that they were told to enter a series of button commands to reset the country code for the printer and consumables (…?) and this worked. Still others reported that they had to call a service tech out multiple times before the problem was eventually fixed. I don't know, but since my printer is 2 years old, I know Samsung will want to hit me up for repair charges. It’s sad that people aren’t going to find out that their printer has such this flaw till its warranty is expired. While I fully intend to attempt returning the failing cartridge to Best Buy for another, I doubt they will accept it since it has been opened. What can I do and how can you help me fix this error myself?

The printer is off 90% of the time and has hardly any use. I reject your reasoning.

SOURCE: Samsung CLP 550N paper jams

Your printer accepts a variety of print materials, such as cut- sheet paper (including up to 100% recycled fiber content paper), envelopes, labels, transparencies and custom-size paper. Properties, such as weight, composition, grain and moisture content, are important factors affecting the printer?s performance and the output quality. Paper that does not meet the guidelines outlined may cause paper to get jam.

SOURCE: Samsung CLP-550N

Your printer has an inner setting within the menu that tells it not to pay attention to the computer's commands. The CD that came with the printer contains the users manuals. However, this is not the default setting, so maybe someone pressed the wrong buttons in the right sequence.

SOURCE: CLP-550N problem with MacOS 10.4.7

Don't know if this would work:

from: http://www.macintouch.com/tigerreview/incompatibility.html

"I have one and have just finished preliminary testing. I have a CLP-550N and use the network port to connect the printer to our wired network. Using Bonjour (a.k.a. Rendezvous) does not work. I can successfully setup the printer, but it will not print. LPD, however, does work fine. You may need to reinstall the PPD files from the CD, or download them from there (sic) website." Brad Scheider reports: "Samsung no longer supports a CLP-500 driver. But I've found that the CLP-510 Driver works in Tiger and fixes many problems I had with the CLP-500 driver on Panther. Works great now."

Load paper from the manual feed at the left side. You need to open the lid first.

Samsung CLP 510 just replaced transfer belts, imaging unit and fuser but now am getting what looks like wet spots on the prints

Hello,

Some toner may have spilled in the printer. If so, you will need to clean it out. Also, the toner cartridge may be defective and letting too much toner out at one time, the solution is to replace the toner cartridge.

Take care.

Invalid New Toner

You may need to get a new chip on the toner tray. If you go to the place that sold you the toner, they likely have the chip that you need.

I have a clp500 with vertical fading on the b&w. I have replaced both the transfer belt and the imaging unit (@ 25000 copies) and am still getting the fading if the printer sits idle for a period of...

Sounds like you may have wet toner, or was once wet toner. Ive worked on printers for years and I have actually found a few cartridges that had bad toner. Kind of like getting sugar or flower wet.
Also. sometimes the imaging unit won't charge the roller properly or the roller gets worn (I.E. Static Charge holds the toner to the drum until it is applied by the imaging unit)
So if you've replaced the imaging unit, then it almost has to be the toner itself or the toner drum. They are both part of the cartridge and the problem should go away if you replace the cartridge.

Good luck

Toner ink

The printer needs to think it has all 4 toners present, and NOT at the end of their life.

There are two methods of achieving your goal of using this as a mon printer only.

1 - a zero cost option which works on a CLP-510, and may work on CLP-500.

Hold the MENU button down whe you switch the printer on. The printer will then start up in 'UNCHECKED CONSUMABLE' mode. You will have to remember to do this each time you turn the printer on.

2 Just replace the reset fuse modules on the Yelllow, Magenta and Cyan cartridges. Much cheaper than replacing the cartridge.

In both these cases, of course there's no more toner in them. but provided you ONLY print mono this shouldn't be a problem, and there's probably an option in the printer driver to set it for mono anyway (but the printer still needs to 'think' it has usable colurs cartridges in it).

Error

I had this problem with my CLP-550, which is now 5 years old and is still on the starter toner cartridges. I found a solution at the following URL, where I at least found a picture of the imaging unit:
http://pcproblemi.blogspot.com/2008/08/replacing-imaging-unit-on-samsung-clp.html
It must have been a contact problem on my imaging unit, because all I did was remove the unit and put it back.
You need to open the toner casing and the duplex unit. Then open the top housing, exposing the imaging unit. Open the plastic retaining levers at front and back of the imaging unit, and just lift it out (not too far), and then put it back.
I then closed the whole thing and it again worked perfectly.
Hope this helps someone.

Toner and Imaging Unit issues

If this IS a CLP-510, first make an information confirmation print.
Press MENU, then press ENTER, and ENTER again.

Look at the counter for the imaging unit, is it a low count confirming that you have indeed replaced it ?
If not you will need to reset the counter.

Check the counters for the toner cartridges, and check the capacity of the cartridge. On a CLP-510 the image counter for the toner is held on the chip on the cartridge (which also identifies the capacity of the cartridge).

There have been some faulty (oiginal Samsung chips), and of course re-manufactured cartridge chips could fail (many re-manufacturers don' test their cartridges before dispatch, they don't have the facility to do so without starting the count on the chip (or 'bowing' the reset fuse on a CLP-500 cartridge). VERY few re-manufacturers can test these cartridges without starting the count.

Sometimes the 'replace xxxxx toner' messages are caused by toner on the three contacts on the side of the cartridge, or their mating contacts inside the printer. Rarely, this can be caused by a faulty circuit board.
