SkipperOz solution pasted below

MFC-5440CN saved from the tip!
"Unable to Clean" message - found TrickyDicky's sltn 4 for various printers.
Went into maint mode as per sltn 4 - verified error 46.
"The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed."

Keyed in 80 - stepped through the items with "down" key and located Purge Counter.
"Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero
Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state."

This worked brilliantly - no need to tamper with any parts of the printer. Purge Counter reset did it all. Fully functional printer.

Thanks TrickyDicky for info on verifying the error code and purge reset

SOURCE: Unable to Init. 46

Your Ink Absorber box is full. The machine cleans its print nozzles by blasting them out with ink; it collects that waste ink and pumps it into a plastic box filled with thick, felt pads. After a certain number of cleaning operations, it decides it's not safe to squirt more ink into the box and gives this Error 46. Replacing the ink absorber box and flushing box and resetting the purge counter is fairly complex. Maybe someone has instructions all typed out, but your best bet is probably to take it to a Brother tech.

SOURCE: MFC-665CW "unable to print" 50 error

Did you have a paper jam before this happened? If yes then the paper must have pushed the encoder strip out of alignment. You will need to turn off the printer and then push it back into slot to fix it. Let me know if you need more help. Sai.

SOURCE: Unable to Clean 4F

Hi there
With some Brother printers you can try this.

Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, and then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.

This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Some times this happens because of using cheap compatible ink cartridges if this is the case change the ink cartridges.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Wont print - "Unable to Init. E3"

I think I solve the issue for scanning so far. Here's what you do goto control panel -> Scanners and Cameras. Then right click into propertise, then check Specify your machine by address. It should already have the printer IP address listed in the box below. If not our can goto to your router and see the ip in the DHCP Client List .

After this I'm able to use the Control Center 3 scanning.

I think the problem was the NODE name list in the setting in my winxp pro does not match the actual NODE name the printer is using.

My mfc 665cw keeps comimg up with unable to init 4f

4F message indicates that the print-head is faulty, you will need to replace it to make it work again. Before you replace it, you may want to try this, see if it will remove the error message: Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3. This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Normal 0 I suggest you get a sheet of Card Stock (Heavy paper) and place it in the feed way. Then press the print button applying a slight amount of pressure on the Card Stock so it will feed through the printer. The reason for this is in some cases I have been able to clear the paper track of debris that was deposited there over time.
Worth a try, as I have fixed a number of printers this way, saving costly repairs.
Hope this helps. Bud
