The problem started after changing paper in the tray from legal back to letter. (I really don't believe that had anything to do with it.) Some days later, when I turned it on, the print head kept sliding back and forth several times, stops, and the LCD showed "Unable to Init 50". I un-pluged it for a couple minutes. Turned it back on, now it shows "Unable to Init 30". Can fix this or is this one shot?

The flat ribbon cabling to the head is broken. You need to replace the head.

Machine Error 50 either means that there is a loose object inside the machine (usually piece of paper), or that there is a mechanical error which would need you to have the machine sent to service.

Hi there
With some Brother printers you can try this.
Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, and then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.
This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.
Some times this happens because of using cheap compatible ink cartridges if this is the case change the ink cartridges.
Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

I have a Brother MFC665CW and it has error message
"Unable to change 50" after paper jam. Paper is all cleaned
out of machine and still shows message.
