There is a grey spot on photographs I have taken and it shows on the live screen.
NOISY PICTURES One of the major
difference between a consumer digital camera and a digital Single Lens
Reflex
(DSLR) is that the former produces images with a lot of noise when
using high
ISOs and long exposure times, and the latter is practically noise-free
(though high ISO performance varies depending on camera manufacturer
and model). Noise
is apparent by the presence of color speckles where there should be
none. For
example, instead of a blue sky, you notice faint pink, purple and
other color
speckles amongst the otherwise blue sky.

No, the so called 'live view' ( seeing pictures in real time on your LCD monitor ) is available only on the latest models that are coming out now ( Canon D40 and Nikon D3 and D300 have this feature ).
SOURCE: My Nikon D40 LCD Screen doesn't show a live view
the d40 does not have live view. you would need to get a different camera.
SOURCE: Red line on the display and shows up on photos
if this red line is still on the picture when you open in the computer, I`m a fried you will need a new CCD. If the pictures are ok in the computer is probable some wire that connect the LCD are interrupted , or the LCD have some dead pixels.

Having looked at other pictures posed on the web it appears that it might be caused by dust on the sensor. If this is he case should I attempt to clean the sensor by myself or should I have it cleaned by a camera repairer.
posed should be posted.
