Is this a Canon EOS 1053 camera? Do you have the old battery for this camera? All the details you need are usually listed on a sticker on the battery itself. It might begin with the letters LP.

Hi.

The camera is asking you to set the quick control icon. Press SET button to set the Quick Control. The Quick Control modes are presets that are used in shooting. After pressing SET, use arrows to move between settings and use the wheel to change settings. I cannot explain all modes and features of a 500D, it will take many pages. You need to read the manual to understand the meaning of your camera's function. SLR cameras are not compact digital cameras. To get the most basic settings set Quick Control to full Auto. Set AF and ISO to AUTO.

Here manual, you find more at page 102: INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Please refer to the pages indicated in diagram below to understand the range of settings for each single option. The diagram is referring to the instruction manual pages:

I have had success with this... Download the photo recovery program http://www.asoftech.com/apr/You have to use a card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader. Put the card in the card reader, open the recovery program, then select the drive where files are deleted, then press "Start" and wait for it to do it's magic.

Certainly, once you upload your photos to your computer. There probably was at least a rudimentary photo editing program that came with the camera. The gold standard for photo editing is Adobe Photoshop. Unfortunately you have to have a little gold to get it. http://www.adobe.com/ A free program is the GNU Image Manipulation Program:: GIMP: GIMP

once deleted, they are gone. unless you have a model that allows recovery, but, since you didn't tell us make, model and age - as well as how long ago you deleted the photos, it could be a problem to try to guide you on how to recover them.

When you say 'vintage', are we talking 35mm or roll film ? If 35mm, looks as if the interlock between shutter release and wind-on spool needs adjusting, but no idea if this is possible.

You can often successfully recover deleted files from a PC, phone or camera memory card or USB Memory stick, it just depends on what's happened since the files were deleted. When you delete files the data itself isn't deleted, just the index entry that says where the data for those files is located. The space containing the deleted files is also now marked as free space so it is available to the system for any new files to be written there instead. If and when that happens, then it becomes too late to recover your deleted files so it is very, very important to not save any new files or data to the device concerned. If the deleted files are on a memory card or USB memory stick, just don't save any new files to it. One of the easiest ways to see if you can recover deleted pictures is to try some photo recovery software. Recommended asoftech photo recovery as it saved my life many times.http://www.asoftech.com/apr/
