Although the code is 2 blocks of characters on the activation card just enter it into the device as 1 continuous code and it will sort itself out

The card is activated to the unit it was originally purchased for.
The card can not be used in another device . They are locked to the device code

if you mean the PC for updating then the USB socket is faulty and needs replacing.

First, register your new navigation device:
  1. Go to www.tomtom.com/getstarted.
  2. Select your country, then click on Get Started.
  3. Follow the online instructions to install the necessary TomTom HOME software on your computer and update your new navigation device with the latest maps.

Have you tried going back to your "Change Preferences" menu, etc. ... to switch back to the Germany map ?
Or (if all your map is under a single map file), try "Navigate to" and select and enter an address in Germany ...

It appears that the battery will not hold a (good) charge anymore. If it is still under warranty, contact TomTom to address that problem. They may replace the unit for you.
It is not unusual for (rechargeable) batteries to loose it's capability to hold a good charge if it is plugged in (to a power source) all the time, even while it is not in use.

It's likely that your map (data) got corrupted. You can recover by restoring your back-up copy of the map (that you'd previously done via TomTom HOME on your computer).

If you don't have a back-up copy, try using your computer's disk check utility to fix the file system and recover data (from the storage media on your GPS device). Just connect the GPS to your computer, no need to use TomTom HOME, just use the Properties tab and use the Tools to run a disk check (assuming you're using Windows).

If that doesn't work, you may want to purchase & download and install the latest copy of the map from the TomTom website (via HOME).
