My Canon EOS Rebel XS only takes pictures indoors (ERR. 01)

You didn't say which shooting mode you're using, but I'd bet you're in Manual mode and have dialed in a completely wrong aperture/shutter speed combination for bright lighting conditions. For example, 1/60th of a second and f2.8 in bright sunlight would be "burning out" your image, so the camera may be giving you an error message. Try using AUTO or PROG setting and see if the problem persists. If it does, try a different lens. You may have an incompatible mount, or one of the contacts may be damaged. If all else fails, try your lens on another Canon camera.

I tested the camera without film and verified it

I don't have any ideas on why the camera is not shooting, but you can view or download the instruction manual here.

Get message "cannot create folder"

Format the memory card in the camera, not the computer. Also, it could be a memory card issue, do other cards cause the camera to return the same message. If yes, then it well could be the camera.

Quantaray lens

You did not mention which lens. Some Canon digital cameras will only take EFS lens, others take both EF and EFS. Also there are other types of lens mounts made by Canon. Cordially,

Can't shoot in landscape mode

sorry, you have not provided enough information. So, here is a simple answer, hold the camera so that the long side is parallel to the ground, that is landscape mode. Portrait mode is the short side parallel with the ground, thus rotate the camera 90 degrees. All cameras work the same way, it is the position we the shooter holds the camera. Cordially
