I ran out of black ink, though at the time, the color ink was working perfectly. I replaced the black ink cartridge and the printer now prints in black perfectly. But the color won't print at all. It isn't faded or sloppy or uneven. It spits out a clean, blank sheet of paper, when the previous day, before I replace the black cartridge, it had been perfect. I have tried cleaning it but that did nothing. It tells me that I am out of ink, which I find hard to believe. When I went to Office Max to get a new cartridge and told the man there my problem, he agreed that it could not be running out of ink to stop printing so abruptly. I have a store extended warrentee but would like to avoid taking it there if possible.
1. Try a hard reset - unplug printer from power source and PC for about 2 minutes and recplug everything and see. 2. Make sure cartridge is seated properly. 3. Uninstall and reinstall the driver/software. Latest version of your driver can be found at Canon's website. Any queries or comment, please post back.
Since you already tried cleaning tha colored cartridges the next thing that you can possible do is to remove all the cartridges then turn off the printer for 5 minutes then put the cartridges back in and hopefully now the printer will be able to recognize that cartridges are still not epty, but if still the same thing try to use another colored cartridges if possible so we can check if that will also give the saem results...

The Epson CX9400F printer seems to require replacement of all the color ink cartridges, even if only the Black is empty.
I print almost exclusively in Black, but with my first change of Black, I was forced to change all the color. At the time I thought Epson did not provide completely filled color ink cartridges.
Just yesterday, I replaced Black and the printer complained it did not recognize the rest of color cartridges. So I replaced all the other color ink cartridges and now it works fine.

First try a hard reset - Unplug printer from power supply, wait 2 minutes and replug and see. If that doesnt work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver and software. Also ensure that the cartridge is properly seated in the holder.
Hello merelU. I'm afraid you may have to replace the empty color cartridge as there may be problems with the printer while an expired cartridge is installed on the printer (even though some of the cartridges are still under warranty) and also, HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of expired
ink cartridges.
Yes, this printer has fixed printheads and must have ink in each color to prevent damage to the printheads. Even when printing black only each color is spit in the servicing area to keep the printhead unclogged.

Make sure you do NOT have Use color cartridge for all black printing selected.
(I had set that a while ago when my black cartidge ran out when the kids had a paper due - I forgot I had reset it. Once my color cartidge ran low, everything printed pink).
Epson ink jet printers require all of the ink cartridges to have ink in them in order to print any color, black and white, or grayscale images. Epson printers contain a permanent print head that needs to be charged with all colors to work. Even when users are printing black text only, a small amount of color ink is used to keep the print head charged for color printing and prevent air bubbles from entering the color print nozzles which can damage the print head. Therefore, once one of the cartridges are expended, the printer signals you to replace the cartridge in order for printing to continue.
