Have been printing from my laptop all evening with no problem(aside from a few paper jams) and now the printer won't detect paper in the main tray. I have unplugged it and left it then reconnected it as advised by the website, but it still does not detect paper in the main tray.

"Paper Jam" issues are common with printers. They most often occur right after there has been a paper jam. Most people (not necessarily YOU), don't take the time to read how to properly clear a paper jam in their printers and often yank the jammed sheets backward thru the paper tray. Most times you should remove the cover in the back and pull the jam FORWARD out the rear, or if the jam made it close to the output tray, then FORWARD thru to the output tray. Pull sheets backward can cause two issues. It makes tearing the paper easier. This can result in tiny pieces being caught in places where the printer detect them as a jam. The other issue is that pulling backward can damage the feed rollers that pull the paper into the machine, as well as the mechanical sensors that detect paper jams. If you cannot find ANY shards of paper in the machine, you may have printer damage that results in the jam indication.
The error code 50 indicates a paper jam condition. Whether there's actually still paper jammed or not, it's sensors are still indicating a jam. Check again for a bit of paper, or there may be a faulty sensor. Check out this link: Brother for further information.
I use to have an HP All-In-One Laser Jet printer that, for reasons unknown to me, wouldn't print after clearing a paper jam until I replaced the ink cartridge.
Even though u cant see a jam there there is exactly a jam inside U believe it or not thats why paper jam Look for the paper detection sensor below the carriage use ur common sense I cant say exactly it is detect sensor it may be some other sensor related to gear wheel set but most of the cases paper jam occurs due to malfunction of paper detect sensor If u find it use a thin tool to see it is working properly otherwise give it to someone know how to repair & pay a reasonable price thx
Printer wont stop paper, if any page length mismatch,Select page length as any size, as well as while shooting the print command select page length as legal & try it. I feel that teflon not rotating properly, result paper jamming at bottom end. If any paper length faulty printer detects the length give message of mis match..Pl check carefully...
Hello and Welcome to FixYa! Paper jam means their may be small bit paper jam in side, actually there are some "micro sensors" that detect a paper
jam. There will be tiny piece of paper inside those
sensors, thus tripping the sensor and paper jammed keeps coming up. To solve this first of all Open printer cover and check to make sure no paper or foreign objects obstructing the printer feeder, If you become sure that now really there is no paper, dust or foreign objects thenTurn the printer off, and disconnect the AC power-cable. Open the printer cover & now give the printer a "blow-job" by compressed air. If still problem exist then best & final option is to just contact to any Canon Printers service provider. I hope this solution helps you Thank you for using FixYa!
You may wish to try checking the paper path of the printer. Open the back door of the printer where you would open it to let an envelope come out, and check underneath the rollers in the main cartridge area. Sometimes, small pieces of paper may get stuck and it trips the paper jam detection circuit. As this is an inkjet printer, there shouldn't be too much going on in there as it's not as complex as a laser printer is.
