Do you have sensors that stop the gate closing on people or cars ? If so put your ear near the sensor but not inline with the opposite one. The first place to look is your receiver. This is the device, often separate from the actual gate operator, that responds to your transmitter. Stand next to the gate operator and you should hear a small click coming from the receiver when you or someone else pushes the button.
