My LIDE 20 scanner fell off from my desk and the scanning mechanism is stuck at other end(near the cover pivot) with fast ticking sound. How do I repair it?

It is normal for this scanner to briefly "scan" when it is plugged in. However, the moving lens shouldn't go all the way down to the back end. It sounds like the scanner is physically damaged, most likely the belt slipped several cogs and now the scanning mechanism is out of alignment. Look into warranty service for the unit.
Same problem happened to me last week on my newly purchased canon lide scanner, then I realized there is a tape that holds the mechanism underneath the scanner. You will have to remove the tape, and see if it is set to the unlocked position (mine has a sort of a knob if my memory served me right).
I had the same problem. I disconnected the scanner from the PC. restarted my computer. Shook my scanner a little bit while PC was rebooting (or maybe a little slap) and when PC was rebooted), i plugged my scanner back and it recalibrated automatically.
I've just got this problem after a powercut, whilst it was not being used but on. If you have only had it a few months send it in warranty. Think I will have to take this apart and see if the scanner cable/ribbon/drive belt is caught on something or been stretched too much and can be replaced at all. Its like at one end its caught and wont move the scanning head being stuck somehow, caught on something (doubtful tho').
I had this problem with my old Canon scanner and my new Canon scanner. I mistakenly threw my old scanner away, believing the problem to be terminal, only to find the new scanner demonstrates the same problem. The problem appears on whatever computer I install the drivers on (I have 3 computers). Constantly unplugging and plugging the scanner back into the USB port eventually sorts the problem out, i.e. the scanning arm will go to the 'home' position and stay there waiting for some scanning action. I presented this problem to technical support of Canon, and this was their response.....
************************* Thank you for contacting Canon.
It appears that your Scanner is receiving commands from your PC to
scan. That means that the scanner can only operated when a command is
given by your PC, the scanner can not operate all by itself.
In that case we suggest you contact the manufacturer of your PC or
Microsoft for further assistance in solving this problem with your
operating system.
I hope this information is of use to you.
************************* Well there you go, the biggest example of 'pass the buck' you may have ever seen. Having been a software enginner and using computers for the last 25 years, I sort of don't believe this - AT ALL. My only conclusion is to get a new scanner and make sure it isn't a Canon.
If you find out the answer to this problem, and I haven't thrown my scanner away by that time, then I'd be interested in it.
Is your lock/unlock mechinism underneath in the unlock position?
I have a scanmaker 4800 and am assuming ours have basic similarities.
Mine has 2 round magnets that are visible when the glass is removed.
Once they fell out of place when I took it apart and I had to reglue them in. Is anything in the pathway of your carriage rail?(I don't know what else to call it) but a little wheel on the right side slides up and down this rail and maybe one of those little round magnets fell out and is blocking it.
communication error ocurs only when the scanner receives signal from PC to move but some where it gets stuck and application receves faulty signal from the scanner , i would suggest to clean the Roller Rod with OIL.
