Hi Susan,

We'd strongly advise against attempting to disassemble the cyclone pack, as this is likely to snap the internal bin-base release rod, and can also reduce the performance of your machine.

If you're concerned about the smell from your machine, I'd encourage you to get in touch with us directly, by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US). One of our advisors will be happy to run through some troubleshooting checks to make sure the smell is coming from the cyclone pack. They'll also be able to offer advice on the best way to resolve this issue without damaging your machine.

We'll look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Jack

SOURCE: How do you clean the Dyson dco7 cyclone top

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

We would not recommend that you take the cyclone top apart. This part is designed to be a sealed unit and taking it apart may affect ther performance of your machine ongoing.

If you are concerned with the performance of your machine, please follow the blockage procedure and filter washing instructions on our website in the support section at www.dyson.com or check your user guide.

If you do want to clear dust and debris from the cyclone, we recommend that you simply hold the cyclone top over a bin and bang the sides gently to remove any dust from the inside.

Kind regards
Darran

Dyson dc18 smells like dirty dog

I would clean the filter and let it dry completely for 24 hours. if you put the filter in wet and the run the vacuum the moisture well go in to the cyclone and the dirt would attach to it causing a snowball effect if you will, causing the vacuum to build up with debris and to smell. so clean out that filter really well and let it dry really well then try it out. if it still smells then i would replace the cyclone. they run anywhere around $80.

I can smell a burning rubber type smell coming from my dc07 i. i've switched it off but what can the problem be and can I fix it myself?

More than likely it's coming from the belt in the power head. Due to some difficulty in taking the power head apart and reassembling, I do recommend taking it in to a shop. Getting the tension of the belt correctly is very important. Too tight and it will break the belt, or even cause the motor to burn out sooner than expected by making it work harder. Too loose and you'll have the problem you're having now, and will have to replace the belt again.
Also, hair and thread or dirty bearings on the ends of the roller brush will result in the belt burning out/breaking faster.

On turning on different noise then noticed smell of burning then just stopped working and no power since. DC 07 Dyson.

Unfortunately your motor had burnt up..most times this is due to not cleaning or replacing the filters...the filters get dirty and the motor gets no airflow to cool it....very common on dyson vacs

8 holes in root cyclone are clogged

There is no real solution other than to call Dyson provided still under warranty.

IMHO, DC17 Animal has a flawed design with the sealed canister (at least as purchased in December 2006 purpotedly has been corrected at this time).

The rubber gasket (where you close the bin at the bottom) is so delicate, that even the routine maintenance of emptying the bin can dislodge it (or even crimp it) so that debris (carpet lint, pet hair, etc) enters the cyclone itself eventually clogging it.

After going throught their recommended solution on their web site without fixing the problem, it was a typical customer service experience on calling. But with persistence in explaining their faulty design to them (particularly with regard to the fact that it's caused by routine maintenance), they'll break down and send you a new cylone unit at no charge - from there on out ensure that the thing is sealed after emptying or performing normal maintenance.

Although the original question is somewhat dated, hopefully this will save others some aggravation in dealing with the problem.

A grumpy old guy who simply insists that companies put service/care back into the customer service/care hotlines....

HOW DO I DISMANTLE THE ROOT CYLONE ON A DYSON DC17 ANIMAL

The Cyclone Cylinder needs to be cleaned with hot water poured over the cyclinder and into the cylinder until the water is clear. Afterwards, shake the cylinder several times to get the excess water out. Then let the cylinder dry out for at least two days along with the filter. When my DC17 began to smell like a dirty dog, I discovered that the cylinder had a ton of hair inside it. It took quite awhile to get all of it out. Be patient. Now I know to clean my Dyson every month; otherwise, it will emit a doggy odor.
