I borrowed this White Heavy Duty 1735 sewing machine from a friend but she lost her manual and this is my first urgent need for a sewing machine. Is there a website where I can get a "how to"?

It depends on what you are sewing. If it's boots, shoes ,saddles, purses or heavy duty stuff like that I doubt it. But you could ask the manufacturer. On the other hand if you are sewing light weight skirts etc or using pleather, its not so much the machine but the needle which should be an 18 with heavy duty thread and a longer stitch.
Hope this helps .
You should be on straight stitch selection, use size 16 or 18 needle, apply longer stitch length(3-3.5mm), always lower down your needle using your hand wheel first, so as not to burden the motor when you started sewing your material. Hope this can be helpful.
Go to the singer website,,they have one you can download for free
Go to the home page
At the bottom of the page look for instruction manual--click on it
It will take you to another page
In the box put the model number (example 7700 ) & click search
They have a free download
typically you need to increase the upper tension to 7-8 for very heavy duty materials, I like to start with the machine at like 4 and increase till it is just perfect. Good luck with your project.
