While turning the handwheel towards you monitor the needle when it begins to rise. Look where the needle and the hook (under the bobbin) are. The hook has to cross the needle at just the right time (timing). This is the most likely area that is wrong. If the timing isn't right then something caused this which means needing a repairman to fix.

Most likely the grease used has gotten hard. Take off the top and use your hair dryer to warm it up and attempt to turn back and forth. Afterwards, spray some synthetic spray in this area of your machine.

Singer built many of the White sewing machines. They have most of their manuals available here: https://www.singer.com/support . There are two manuals that are available after a search for the 976. The direct link to the manual that covers just the 976 is https://res.cloudinary.com/singer-sewing/image/upload/fl_attachment/Singer-Website-Library/outdated_product/865_white-976-x.pdf . There is also a manual for the 935, 967 and 976 here: https://res.cloudinary.com/singer-sewing/image/upload/fl_attachment/Singer-Website-Library/outdated_product/853_white-935--967-976-x.pdf . If you want a print copy but do not want to print the manual yourself, there is a source for a hard copy. See https://www.sewingpartsonline.com/instruction-manual-white-976.aspx? to order the manual. I hope this helps. Cindy Wells
