How to oil my sewing machine

My sewing machine will not zig zag or back up.  I can not find my owner's manual to show me where to put the oil. I need a new owner's manual.

I have a euro-pro shark 373. The manual has no instructions for oiling. How do I oil it? Thanks

I have a Kenmore Elite sewing machine (it's probably a 19606, judging by the picture) that I got in 2000. I've gone through the instruction manual line-by-line and nowhere does it mention oiling or lubricating the machine. So--where are the oil ports? How do I lubricate the motor?

I also have a 1950 Singer Featherweight and its instruction manual gives very detailed instructions--why doesn't Kenmore do likewise? (Or is it perhaps that Kenmores aren't made to last 50+ years?)

i have an older model Kenmore machine... i've been working on a project for the last few weeks... making "banner" flags... 25" x 72", with double seamed edges, etc. i've been running the machine pretty steady and 16 more flags to make... my machine is starting to make a little whining noise that sounds like the belt is tightening.... so... i thought it would be best to oil it a little... however... i don't have the manual and need to know where to put the oil... and how much oil to use.... THANKS... Kathrine =)

Kenmore machines may have parts and manuals available on -- have the correct model number usually a 3 digit a dot and the rest of the numbers (i.e., 158.xxxx or 385.xxxx1). You will see a list, and if you click on parts or attachments list and scroll down into the parts list, there should be a manual listed as either available or not.

As to the new machines, Euro-Pro or any other, if really cheap, then my personal feeling is that they are planned to not last for a long time -- which may account for the lack of oiling instructions in their manuals. The other possible reason 'may' be that like some Viking Husqvarna machines, the metal parts could be infused with oil and the heat from running them produces the oil needed as it runs. Somehow I doubt that could be the answer in an inexpensive machine. If a lot of the parts inside are plastic, then no oil is needed, and they will run until the plastic breaks, necessitating a trip to the repair shop.

Only use sewing machine oil which can be bought at any JoAnn's, Walmart, sew and vac, or sewing machine dealer. Never use household oil or the yellow/blue can of spray that is a water displacement solution which ultimately will gum up the works. You could use Tri-Flow Superior Lubricant.

Basic oiling procedure is to oil wherever metal parts meet (possible friction points) or slide past each other -- a drop or two usually. No grease needed on plastic gears. If you have an old machine with metal gears, then use sewing machine lube (grease) or Tri-Flow lube (can get it at a bicycle shop if no where else).

Check that your sewing machine is even capable of zig-zag. Some machines are straight-stitch only.

Consult your owner's manual.

If your machine can do zig-zag, somewhere there is a dial or setting called "stitch width" that will determine how wide the zig-zag will be.

Zig zag quit! machine is spotless inside and oiled

If it is an older machine, ie mechanical not computerized, the internal moving metal parts need periodic oiling. As a matter of fact, some machines actually have little oil ports even though the owner's manual doesn't go into that depth--probably because the machine would get a complete oil and check during standard maintenance at a sewing shop.

Kenmore model 158.1789280 needs a new zig zag guide. Can't find one doing an online search.

Have you cleaned and oiled your machine??? Clean out all the dust and lint with a soft brush.

Use good quality sewing machine oil (not the stuff in your Grandmother's sewing box, 3-in-1, WD-40, or cooking oil). Liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil (from the local hardware store) is a good product for loosening things, but you should follow up with real sewing machine oil.

Open the top lid, the side door over the needlebar, and the bobbin area. Gently move the handwheel (forward, NEVER backward!) and drop ONLY 1-2 drops of oil every place that metal rubs on metal. Do NOT oil belts. Your machine may have oil ports (little holes for oil) so you may want to consult your owner's manual for a picture. Since your stitch selector is not switching to zig-zag, something to do with that mechanism is most likely frozen from lack of oil. Concentrate on that area along with the needlebar side-to-side movement. To help speed up the process, direct heated air from a handheld hairdryer into the internal mechanics. Test. You may need to repeat the process until things are moving freely again. Be sure to place a drop of oil on the bobbin race.

Make sure to oil every time you change a bobbin, every 8 hours of constant sewing, or every 6 months if not in regular use. This will keep your machine healthy--and you happy!

Zig zag stitch is only zigging on the bottom

Do you mean the needle is staying in one position instead of moving side-to-side? Sounds like maybe the needle bar is stuck. If your machine is an older mechanical (pre-1990), it probably needs some oiling to get things loosened up.

Consult your owner's manual, use good quality sewing machine oil (NOT 3-in-1, WD-40, cooking oil, or the oil from your grandmother's sewing basket). Apply one one-two drops each spot.

White sewing machine won't stop the zig zag stitch

my suggestion is take the machine in to a sewing machine shop
to be check to see if something inside is broken or come loose
knowing the machine is in good working order gives peace of mind
instead of wanting to through it out the window
and get a instruction manual
Go to the singer website for a free pdf manual
Go to the home page
Go to customer service--click on it--it will show a small menu--click on instruction manual
In the box put the model number (example w265) & click search

I have a Bernina 830, the older original one which is not computerized. My zig-zag does not engage. When I turn the knob selector, it turns and the needle does move back and forth. But when I sew the needle...

Take your machine in for service.

Bernina is the only brand that holds value and anything you try may damage the machine.

Take the machine to an authorized Bernina dealer for service.
