Top load machines will fill with water while the lid is open. Your problem starts when you close your lid. NOTHING happens. I believe this to be your LID SWITCH . Replace or have replaced and you should be OK. GOOD LUCK.

By determining what the washer WON'T DO, you should be able to determine (also using the Whirlpool manuals' troubleshooting section) what part you need.

There are 3 different style lid switches used on Whirlpool/Kenmore washers. You have to break down the unit to determine which one you use. Any appliance parts house will carry what you need.

you may want to check, the motor coupler,
this is a three piece part, it sits between the transmission, and the motor and controls the speed
just by being in place..

Assuming that this is a basic top load, direct drive, neutral drain machine, the following is the Whirlpool (Kenmore) installation and maintenance manual with a very good troubleshooting section.

The problem seems to point to either the timer or motor.
